I just got this message from Rod Dreher:
"On Sunday, The Dallas Morning News will begin publishing the results of a major yearlong investigation into a largely uncovered aspect of the Catholic sex abuse scandal. The series of stories are international in scope, and will make headlines nationally and overseas. I’m not at liberty to disclose details yet, but I’ve seen advanced copies of the articles, and they are devastating. I believe at this point, more details will be available on Friday morning, when one of the reporters on the series does an interview on National Public Radio’s “Morning Edition.” The stories will be available on the dallasnews.com website starting either late Saturday night or early Sunday morning.
I expect these stories to dominate conversation among concerned American Catholics next week, and into the early summer (because there will be much more to come; next week’s series only reveals part of what our reporters have uncovered and documented). These findings give lie to the claim from Church officialdom that this scandal is over. The cover-up continues."

They have known. They hoped you and I wouldn’t find out. That’s part of the story... Also, our people are now talking to national media about this. Starting Friday night, you might be seeing stuff about this. I’ll let Dom and others know if any early media appearances are scheduled."

"Oh, gosh no. That has nothing to do with it. This story is enormously complex, and required an incredibly long period of time, and much detail work and traveling, to nail down. The reporters, some of whom have been on this project for well over a year, have been anxious to publish their findings for some time, but the editors have (wisely) wanted to make sure we’ve covered all the bases.
Gang, I know that my lack of specifics only makes Malachi Martin-like speculation possible, and likely. Let me say that this is not about Andy Greeley’s thing, nor is it directly about homosexuality. It’s about a breath and depth of cover-up that has not yet been reported on as completely as our team is about to. I’ve seen the front page for Sunday, with the photo, and read the stories that will lead the series, and it’s absolutely sick-making.
I’m hearing from the newsroom that one of the reporters on the series just taped his “Morning Edition” interview, so you can get the basics of the story in the morning on NPR. They’re still trying to decide whether or not to start rolling out the first story on the website on Friday or Saturday, ahead of Sunday publication. There’s also a possibility that one or more of our reporters will be on “Newsnight with Aaron Brown” on CNN tomorrow night, to offer more details—and possibly show that iconic photograph we’re going to publish on Sunday."

And you are exibit A why Catholics join traditionalist movements. You would rather assume the priest was an ass than that he was deceived by the father, and Peach has an obvious ax to grind against the Church.

There is something inhumanly cruel about being punched in the face and then being taunted for crying out. There are posters here who should be burning with shame right now. But never mind them. No matter what stories they make up, YOU know the truth about what happened, and no one can take that from you.

To assume, in your fanciful scenario, that Peach's father was correct in his statements, if, indeed, he spoke to the priest, was simply brain-dead, on the part of the priest.
To then take those statements and tell her mother to stay away from Communion should bring judgment on his soul.
I don't believe anyone on the "other" side has been as judemental as you and some of the others! The rest of us are just pointing out how obtuse your being.

However, that being said, it was wrong for the priest to deny the family the Sacraments (and yes, people as young as 7 can receive Communion). I think that was something that Vatican II rectified.

Not just the pope, but also the bishops. Even the innocent ones have lost all credibility. Priests in general have retained a little credibility but nothing like that which they had 40 years ago.

Did anyone call her a pagan, as #235 did to all Catholics? Catholics and the Church have been bashed repeatedly in this and other threads.

Not true (unless they remarry without annulment).
Unless your Mom had remarried that week, there was no reason she and you kids, as you were prepared, could not receive the Sacraments.
That priest was an idiot, but he wasn't the only one from that time frame. I met a woman who attended Mass every Sunday, but never went to Communion because when her husband sent her divorce papers in the mail, a priest told her the same thing; if she was divorced, she couldn't go to Communion. I was livid and told her that the priest was wrong, but I'd talk to the Pastor of our Parish, just to reassure her. I did so, she called him, and the following week, she went to Communion for the first time in over 20 years. She was in tears, she was so happy.
I'm sorry that situation turned you from the Church. I hope you'll reconsider, someday.
Catholic parishoners are just people moving along in life and doing the best they can. Its the heirarchy from top to bottom that deserve this bad rap. Everyone owes it to themselves and their family to do a serious examination of this religon as well as all other religions.
Vatican II had NOTHING whatsoever to do with whatever changes may or may not have been made in Church practices on divorce/remarriage/annulment, etc.
I was NEVER aware of people being told to 'stay away from Church' due to divorce back in the 1950's, nor in the 1960's, when I was old enough to notice and care.
Basic common sense applies here: if someone is the cause of a divorce, they are responsible to confess, etc., etc. If they are NOT the cause, they should have no problem whatsoever. Sinky avers that there were lots of priests who were telling folks to stay away from the Sacraments simply because they were civilly divorced. That MAY be true, and it MAY be partially true. It may also be false.
It's rare for an individual to tell their children the 'whole story' on a divorce--VERY rare. Thus, most of what we read on the internet is apocryphal--we are simply not in a position to judge (thank God.)
It's been my experience that the vast majority of individuals who have left the Church have left over a marriage or sex issue, in general terms. Not abuse, not fraud, not theft, not the lousy music.
I don't believe the story. Not one bit.
As soon as I saw the title I expected it was something to do with Abu Ghraib.
