Columbia County News Times Endorses Herman Cain

- Press release

6/16/2004

First newspaper endorsement goes to political “outsider”

Today, Republican U.S. Senate candidate Herman Cain received the endorsement of the Columbia County News Times.

Barry L. Paschal, publisher of the Columbia County News Times, stated in his column:

“All are good men, and after a recent one-on-one conversation with Herman Cain, I'm inclined to give him my vote. His opponents are Johnny Isakson and Mac Collins, two congressmen with proven records; Cain is a successful businessman, coming at the race with "outsider" appeal.

“…unlike most "outsider" candidates, he's firmly grounded in common sense. He's a staunch advocate of a national sales tax to replace the federal income tax, and he wants real, top-to-bottom reform of Social Security -- needs that only an outsider would have the courage to tackle.

“Even better, Cain is a businessman who is entering public service not to massage his own ego, but to give back to the country that allowed him to be successful. Imagine that: A politician running to give, not to take. How much more "outside" can you get?”

Cain, the first candidate to go on television and radio, has been steadily building an unparalleled grassroots organization across Georgia. He was neck and neck in fundraising with his opponent, Rep. Johnny Isakson, last quarter. Other endorsements Cain has received include: Georgia Right to Life, Club for Growth, National Republican Coalition for Life, Eagle Forum, The Madison Project and the Home School Legal Defense Association.

Herman Cain! Coming on hard and fast. This man is RUNNING for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by The Honorable Zell Miller. Just a few years ago I would not have thought those words would ever come from me. I still don't miss Governor Zell Miller. However, I will miss Senator Zell Miller.

I pray that Herman Cain will be his replacement. He has the momentum and is working harder. He has the leadership ability to perform the tasks he has set for himself.

National Sales Tax
Renovation of Social Security
Protecting the Unborn
Balanced Budget
Tort Reform
Strong Military
War on Terrorism
etc. More Cain Issues

Herman Cain wants your support wherever you live, and wants your vote if you live in Georgia.

Go! Cain GO!!!!

Newspaper endorsements will be particularly important to Cain; as an outsider, he needs that vote of confidence from the familiar to convince people it's safe to vote for him.

What's perhaps most amazing, IMHO, about the endorsement, is that the word "diversity" doesn't appear in it..Cain's being reviewed, and selected, on the strenght of his positions, and his ability to articulate them..

I take it Isakson is the Democrat opponent? Or is this still a primary race? (stranger things have happened, at least up north!)

Answering my own question...it's a primary race! Here's a good link for anyone else interested but unfamiliar with Georgia politics:

Folks,
I don't have verification on this yet, but it was just posted on the Georgia FR site.

Latest Poll on the Georgia Senate Race

Isakson 41
Cain 22
Collins 16

Isakson has dropped from 50 to 41. Herman Cain is now in solid second place.

For those of you from outside Georgia, this is the race for the Republican Primary July 20th.

To win a candidate must have 50% plus 1 vote. If the election were held today, according to this poll, there would be a run off between Johnny Isakson and Herman Cain.

Thanks be to God! But if RINO Isakson doesn't come in first, the Atlanta media will pull out all stops to make sure he's #1 in the run-off.

I am encouraged by the fact that rural Georgia usually has more to do with the final count in state wide races than Metro Atlanta.

Mr. Cain is working the outer Atlanta area and rural Georgia, where he is strong and coming on stronger.

Traditionally, GOP primary votes came from the Atlanta Metro Area. It is good to see Herman Cain campaigning for every vote. It is strange that Cain is making inroads with rural GA. You'd think that Mac Collins would the one to do that. But anyway, I hope Cain wins the primary. His Cain campaign appealing to people who don't normally vote in GOP primaries. Cain's Senate campaign is what the "Big Tent" should be about.

Latest Poll on the Georgia Senate Race

Isakson 41%
Cain 22%
Collins 16%

I read this as:

Isakson 41%
Cain 38%
Undecided going into the runoff 21%

Cain can win.

Thanks for the update. I went to Cain's headquarters yesterday to pick up yard signs and they were all out, but were expecting more on Friday.

Maybe people are snatching them up, but I was very disappointed. So far I've put out about 40 signs in intown Atlanta. Most haven't stayed around very long, especially the ones I put around Jimmy Carter's Library. Surprisingly, the sign that had been up the longest is in Little 5 Points, the old hippie, ultra-liberal neighborhood of Atlanta. Maybe old hippies are also getting tired of paying high taxes.

I'll be back Friday to get more signs. My teenage son likes putting them out. Whenever we have an errand to run we put out yard signs along the way. It takes very little time and it's giving him a good lesson on getting involved in a political campaign.
