BAGHDAD, Iraq - A rocket slammed into a U.S. logistics base near the city of Balad Wednesday afternoon, killing two U.S. soldiers and wounding 21 people, the military said.
Fourteen of the injured were taken to the U.S. Army's 31st Combat Support Hospital and seven were treated at a clinic on the U.S. base, known as Camp Anaconda, according to a military statement.
Balad is 50 miles north of Baghdad.
You can bet the troops and their leaders think about it all the time. Sometimes there are ways. Sometimes you just have to chin up and take a risk.
It sounds pretty cold-blooded, but being shot at is in the job description. Still, better terrorists letting go at our troops (who are trained to react and have excellent protective equipment) in Iraq or Afghanistan, than coming here and letting go at our children.

You are right. A real coward wouldn't even attack. Those who call ambushers and hit and run attackers are idio-- I mean uninformed.
Too many people THAT AREN'T EVEN THERE take these attacks personal. It isn't personal, it's business.
Sometimes I wonder why I even bother reading these threads when all they do is agrivate me. I've had many impacts within 100 meters. Many. Mortar and rocket. Have even had US ordnance fall within 300 meters of my position. I've watched at the enemy walking in and bracketed us with mortars within 250 meters. Forutnately the USMC guns silenced them before they got any closer.
Don't worry too much about it, some people like to lord their knowledge over you, some just don't have the patience to seek truth with you.
I'm as in the dark as you as regards this particular attack, so I don't know the specifics of the base that was hit. I just suppose that, if the base was within the city, only a small perimeter around it can be permanently secured. So there must be nearby buildings and streets where the attacker can fire from, and then run for his life.
These attacks are probably not really planned to maximize efficiency, I suppose it's more of a hit-and-run thing where the most important thing is that a rocket was fired at a US base. It bolsters up the morale of the insurgents, and supposedly degrades the morale of the Coalition troops because they can be attacked everywhere.
Oh, so they use ice as a delay mechanism ? But that means they have to sacrifice a mortar everytime, then ?
LFOD,Kiss back from a Mom .
Who told you that? Ice doesn't vaporize and let the round drop quickly, the ice would melt slowly and ease the round to the bottom of hte tube.
Is the whole 106th now in Kuwait? I know my nephew has been there for quite a while just waiting on the rest to get there.
There were warehouses full of the stuff before we got here. Add to that being "assisted" by others & there seems to be enough to go around.
I'll pass that along to the guys living outside the wire who find the stuff.
I see...
We kicked this idea around months ago. According to my sources in CI it is urban legend material. Heck, it doesn't even make sense when you think about it.
But anything is possible, isn't it?
We still have a few left in Balad...
Im armyboy's and the 106th 1sgt...I was sent home in March on a medical (skin cancer) I was cleared to go back by Walter Reed, but Ft Campbell refused, to my dismay...Im stateside waiting for my troops return...I will meet up with them at Ft. Campbell to process them home....
I am happy that you heard from your son-in-law Gator113. I don't think none of our troops will ever be the same. God bless them all.
With all the news of the terrorist's intentions that were revealed yesterday, God help and bless us all.
Will do RaceBannon.
I'm afraid is gonna get worse for our boys and girls once the US hands over the reins of power to the Iraqis.
"my granddaughter is 4 ID and came home for Easter, might be sent back"
Is she free to refuse to go? I wonder. I mean, it sounds as though she does not have a choice. Afterall she already served, what not send fresh new troops?
PinC,I don't think so,orders are orders.
