Has Anyone Considered This Horrible Possibility?
Self | June 15, 2004 | Sophie

Does anyone on this forum consider it a possibility and even a probability that someone in the new Iraqi government might facilitate the escape of Saddam Hussein just as some in the Saudi government are facilitating the escape of terrorist assassins?

As discussion about turning him over to the new Iraqi government is discussed more and more, my blood chills at the thought.

Absolutely. And whoever gets the power will also be a friend of OBL. Frankly, in my opinion, OBL left Afghanistan on the free flights to Mecca and is now in Syria or Iran, after the downfall of the Taliban and the murder of the Afghan Travel Minister.

There won't be anywhere in the Middle East for him to hide except maybe in the cave next door to Osama's. They don't like losers out there.

Yes, it was the first thing that came to mind when I saw the MSN headline. If it happened in late October John Kerry could not get better news.

More likely scenario he'll manage to behead himself in his cell in a bizarre suicide.

The Iraqis aren't tied down by political correctness the way we are. I doubt any of his guards will be sunnis and they will likely be augmented with American troops as well.

3 relatively anonymous gunmen are a whole different animal than a famous dictator, reviled by millions.

He isn't Lex Luther or something - without his people and stuff in place, his powers are pretty damn limited.

I saw the new PM on FOX this morning and am very worried. He never answered a single question. If asked "when", he'd answer "how". If asked "why", he'd answer "what".

A politician ducking questions at a news conference? Hmm -- maybe they are ready for democracy!

Maybe not so much as facilitate, but allow him to escape through incompetence. That would be frustrating and infuriating, too.

"With any luck, we'd have surgically placed a tag on him by now."

No kidding. If somebody fails to put in the marking technology, somebody ought to get canned. I'd load that guy up with micro chips like confetti sprinkles on a doughnut.

From the time that I knew the handover date, I have been certain that when the US stands down in Iraq, we can expect some big time monkeyshines from both the anti coalition and pro coalition elements in that place. The pro coalition element would want to consolidate its gains and authority, the anti coalition element, of course, will want to fill the power vacuum. The luke warm from either faction will play both ends against the middle. Just remember, allegiances do not possess the same nobility of character and not regarded with the same near holy reverence by Iraqis as they are by Westerners. There is NO tradition for it in the Middle East. They see allegiances as impediments to progress, it's just the opposite for us. Hang on to your hat. It will be nothing like politics as we know it in the West.

I like your thinking.

Hitler helped Mussonli Benito escaped after he was overthrown. At the end of the war, his own people hung him. I think that is what will happen if he escapes.

Under absolutely no circumstances would the Shiites ever allow Saddam to escape with his life intact. The Sunnis would have to launch a military-style rescue operation for it to work, and the place is going to be so heavily guarded but everyone (including us) that I don't like the chances for their success
