President Bush certainly didn't score any points with his conservative base on Monday when he praised Bill Clinton to the hilt during the unveiling of the impeached president's White House portrait.
"President Bush was more laudatory and more passionate about Bill Clinton than he was about President Reagan [during Friday's memorial service]," contended nationally syndicated radio host Michael Savage Monday night.
When Bush spoke about Reagan, said Savage, "we got empty homilies. We got less than empty homilies - we got a Mr. Rogers job."
But at the Clinton portrait ceremony, Savage said, "Today we actually got a passionate President Bush. He was almost animated to be around Bill Clinton. The guy looked happy."
Though the Bush-Clinton lovefest left many of the president's fans fuming, Mr. Clinton's obvious enjoyment of Bush's kind words also raised eyebrows inside Sen. John Kerry presidential campaign, which only 24-hours earlier had been assured that Clinton would come out swinging this week against the White House.
"Maybe [Bush and Clinton] have a mutual interest in a Democrat not winning this November," said MSNBC host Chris Matthews, noting that a Kerry loss would pave the way for Mrs. Clinton's 2008 presidential campaign.
How about Debka reporting that Newsmax quoted Savage? :)
I thought President Bush's speech was nothing more than a beautiful indication of his grace and charm, and nothing less than a calculated move to make him look exactly that.
He was a family character. His wife and mother-in-law (who lived with them) were cold-water Southern Methodists, but Uncle Osgood was a drinking man. They made him keep his whisky in his bathroom cabinet. It was the highest compliment for him to invite you to "see his bathroom." (You could usually find all the men of the family back there.)
When my dad got engaged to my mother, he took her over to meet Uncle Osgood. He rang the bell, and Uncle O. appeared on the doorstep in his dressing gown with his omnipresent briar pipe. Dad introduced mom, and Uncle O. looked her up and down, then turned to dad. "Does she love you?" he asked. Dad responded, "Well, sir, she says she does." Uncle O. looked her up and down again and said, "She looks mean to me . . . but I like my women mean." Then he invited them back to see his bathroom . . .
I agree it was a class "act". I would have vomited. That is why I cannot be a politician. The question is did he vomit later?
Oh I think it's even better than that! Clinton will think that he has won someone over!!! He can't stand it if he isn't adored.
ROTFL... Family Characters are cool. I hope to be mine one day... ;0)
What an interesting character. Thanks for sharing!
I am so happy to have "hung" the rapist in the White House and his corrupt wife.
Savage was an absolute loon yesterday...you can stick a fork in him, he is done.
"Conservatives are irked?"
The article only mentions Savage...
And what DOESN'T irk Savage?
BTW, my daughter is in the Alaskan tundra as we speak, with no running water, no toilets, in a tent with mosquito nets over her face on a Christian mission trip to help the injuns up there.
I thought you might be interested.
Savage referred to himself as "the Solzhenitsyn of talk radio." Yeah....right. Savage is a radio host desperately searching for a place of distinction on the talk-radio landscape. He seems to be taking the predictable road of contrarianism. Pretty soon he'll go full bore left.
But most of our 'characters' are nice. You'd never meet a kinder man than Uncle Osgood, he was always spoiling the nieces and nephews and helping every lame dog and hard luck case in town.
But what I meant to say, is that Uncle O. could kill somebody with kindness better than anyone I ever met. If called upon to speak about somebody like Clinton, I think he would have produced something similar . . . and it would be only upon reflection after it was all over that the hearers would realize what he didn't say.
If thine enemy be hungry, give him bread to eat; and if he be thirsty, give him water to drink:
For thou shalt heap coals of fire upon his head, and the LORD shall reward thee.
Proverbs 25:21-22 - see also Romans 12:20.
President Bush's presentation speech was so polar opposite of how Savage would have handled himself that I'm not surprised in the least that Savage is upset.
Actually, I did.
Can you elaborate on your response?
I find it difficult to follow.
Me too! Sucking up to the Clintons in front of the rest of the world serves no purpose in my foolish mind.
Whenever a story is breaking, Newsmax will have their two High School reporters scaning the news channels on their parent's TVs.
Well, that's good for her to do, and I know I appreciate it when people are selfless like that.
However, that's really not the point of this discussion. tell me: What would you have had Bush say, and why?
