WASHINGTON, June 14 (AP) - Explosive growth among Hispanic- and Asian-Americans propelled a surge in the United States population from 2000 to 2003 to nearly 300 million people, the Census Bureau reported on Monday.
The number of people of Hispanic descent, the nation's largest minority group, rose to 39.9 million, a 13 percent increase from April 2000 to July 2003, the agency said. That far outpaced the 3 percent increase in the American population during the same time, to 290.8 million.
Asian-Americans were the next fastest growing among the large minority groups, up 12.6 percent, to 11.9 million, while the black population rose nearly 4 percent, to 37 million.
About 4.3 million people listed themselves as of more than one race, up 10.5 percent from 2000.
The population of Hispanic- and Asian-Americans rose in nearly every state over the 1990's, in large part as a result of immigration. People who identified themselves only as "white" remained the single largest group, at 197 million, up just 1 percent from 2000 to 2003.
As small as Asian voters are, they are the bellwhether of US politics.
We (caucasions) are doomed by the relatively new power of birth control technology. Spend your time trying to set down your stories on sturdy mediums.
WELCOME TO AMERICA!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It's not that bad.
Come to St. Paul, Minnesota and you'll change your mind. You'll see what the Asian immigrants have done to once nice neighborhoods, and how they are draining the social services.
It depends on the region I guess. What he said is pretty much true where I live.
I've never visited that area, so I can't really comment on what's going on- but I'd be interested in knowing which "flavor" of asians are causing problems.
Don't you dare talk this way about a minority group(protected class). Don't you know that diversity is our greatest strength? A white person never has the right to criticize a non white for any reason. Didn't you learn anything in public skool?
That would be Hmoung.
Mountain people of Laos. Very backward culture. The kids are coming around, but the adults are very set in their ways.
Asians are not a protected minority in the U.S. Blacks and Hispanics are. Don't believe me? Try getting into college with a 4.0 GPA and an Asian last name. Tough luck. But mention somewhere on your application or admission essay that you are Black or Hispanic, and doors are opened wide for you.
What kind of a country downplays academic merit in favor of racially-based (and biased) criteria for admission to university?
Both legal and illegal immigration.
Our state (Minnesota) got just what they deserved from their ignorant stereotyping. Elected officials spewing praises of Asians from their mouths about how hard working and wonderful they are.
We have the highest Hmong pop. in the US and I can truthfully say that many of the Hmong have turned our neighborhoods into to trash.
Most of it I attribute to taking in third world people who live in dirt (literally) and giving them homes in middle class neighborhoods, and fostering a "you owe me attitude".
Our system of giving hand outs to immigrants is a disaster.
I have Jewish, Chinese, Columbian and Black ethnicities in my immediate family, so I hope you understand I have no problems with "diversity".
That's why I advocate no racial categories on applications. That way people with a chip on their shoulder about something don't go around blaming black or hispanic students for their own personal failings.
Here in my immediately neighborhood, the Asian families are pretty much the way that poster described. Now in Queens, I hear different stories that gangs of Asian kids beat up people on the street, etc. If there's one stereotype that has never gone out of style is the myths about Asians. However, I notice the same thing from the different groups of people no matter where they come from in that they come here and some special interest group says they don't have to adapt to America but America has to adapt to them.
I'm not there, I don't have to deal with the problems you describe. I would say this- during the Vietnam war, we sought these people's help...and pretty much left them in the dirt when SV fell.
From my limited understanding, the Hmong are not like the middle class, hard working, educated Jews/Vietnamese/Korean people that came here and immediately started creating value, signing up for West Point, etc.
It may be easy for me to say living in Houston, and not having to deal with the issues you raise...but I think we really owe these folks something. We asked them to fight for us...and abondoned them.
Hope with time things get better.
I advocate no racial categories on applications too. That way people who advocate reverse-discrimination can't put their racist and socialist practices into play and continue destroying America.
And what makes you think Blacks and Hispanics don't get 4.0's? Both of my daughters did.
The Asian girls in my daughter's class refused to speak English during a group project. When my daughter and her friend responded by speaking pig latin they were sent to the principal's office.
Our neighborhood has been calling the police for quite some time about the Asians in our neighborhood and nothing is done about them. Despite the fact that they are so dangerous that the S.W.A.T. team was at their house before.
The grass always looks greener.
