U.S. Charges Australian Linked to al-Qaida

WASHINGTON - An Australian held at the Navy's prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, will face a military tribunal for allegedly training and fighting alongside members of al-Qaida in Afghanistan (news - web sites), the Pentagon (news - web sites) announced Thursday.

One thing I want to try and find is that several-months-old article about the Red Cross hiring for disaster relief...I still think it may provide a clue, and I'm recalling that basically ALL of the cities on that list were coastal.

Feds Watching Suspect in Alleged Mall Plot

Ohio Prosecutor Says Third Suspect Under Surveillance in Alleged Plot to Blow Up Mall

COLUMBUS, Ohio June 16, 2004 — A third man suspected of plotting with terrorists to blow up a Columbus-area shopping mall is under surveillance, a federal prosecutor said.

A federal terrorism task force has the suspect "in a situation where we're convinced no harm will befall the citizens of Columbus," U.S. Attorney Gregory Lockhart said.

Two others have been accused in the alleged plot. Nuradin Abdi, 32, a Somali native, was charged with conspiring with admitted al-Qaida member Iyman Faris and others to detonate a bomb at the unidentified mall after he obtained military-style training in Ethiopia. Abdi's indictment was unsealed Monday.

The Joint Terrorism Task Force searched the Columbus apartment last week of the third suspect, The Columbus Dispatch reported Wednesday, citing unidentified federal sources. The man shared the apartment with Faris, the newspaper reported.

Federal officials have refused to say what they were seeking during the search.

If convicted, Abdi could get up to 80 years in prison. Faris is imprisoned for seeking to sabotage the Brooklyn Bridge.

Lockhart said investigators believe at least one other person who remains free was involved in the conspiracy and that person remains under tight surveillance. He said authorities are still trying to determine how many others might have been involved.

HUGE "TWINKLER" SUDDENLY ACTIVATES IN NORTHWEST SKY!

Greetings, Sky Pilots!

The first time I saw it I knew....

There was something "wrong" with that "star!"

I first began to notice it sometime in late April. It hugged the North west horizon at sundown and seemed to move oddly.

Maybe it was a planet, but I couldn't find it on any charts!

Then I lost track of it over the next few weeks as seemingly endless nights of inclement weather made observations of the night sky difficult if not impossible.

Then, just a few days ago, the weather began to moderate.

And....There it was again.

Low in the northern sky at about 300 degrees on the compass, just after sun down.

It appeared to move even farther to the North as the evening progressed until it vanished over the northern horizon sometime near midnight.

I watched it transit that night and then, yesterday, I watched it again.

It was too bright! No star was THAT bright! A planet? But why was it not on the charts? I retired for the night, puzzled but determined to continue my investigation of this odd northern light.

Darkness comes late at this latitude in the month of June. It was already 10:20 PM when I finally climbed to my observation point and trained my optics to the North.

I couldn't believe my eyes!

The former "star" or "planet" or "whatever" had suddenly come to life!

It was flashing the red, blue, green, white, pattern of a twinkler!

And.... WHAT a twinkler this is! In the 3 years I have been observing twinklers, I have NEVER seen one of this magnitude.

Friends, this thing is HUGE!

Now, it is true that roughly a year ago, several of us here at RMN began to notice that some of these twinklers had begun to change. There are numerous posts on RMN from that period of time that will testify to that. It was noted that many twinklers had begun to appear somewhat larger and also that the flashing had seemed to diminish in intensity and be replaced by a red or "amber" color. That pattern seemed to hold true until the last month or so, when a return to more obvious flashing of color became noticeable.

But there has NEVER been a twinkler like this one! I would like to ask any other readers in the Pacific northwest to try and locate it if they can. It appears immediately after sundown, low on the horizon at about 300 degrees on the compass as read from my latitude and longitude. (46.40 W Latitude, 120.543 Longitude)

Those wishing to locate this "Goliath" of twinklers can do so by adjusting their search to accommodate the difference in their latitude and longitude. Once you get close, you are bound to see it! It is hard to miss.

One caveat, however. Tonight was the first night I have seen it flash so strongly. Let's hope it continues to do so, as that will mark it all the better! Anyone who can locate it, feel free to send me an email! I'll run a post of emails in a day or so! -CliffMickelson

Also, did't they arrest someone - ME type - and find a GPS device in a hotel adjacent to the World Trade Center? He was later let go and they said the chamber maid confused the room number.

Finding a GPS device adjacent to the WTC is no big deal. We already have first class cartography tools that will give a precise lat/lon for any spot you place the mouse cursor. The guys who programmed the cruise missile targets for Desert Storm used standard map tools and loaded the GPS routes weeks in advance. The missiles literally flew down major roads and turned at intersections. Almost comical. Too bad that this approach allowed easy shootdown and capture of unexploded devices.
