All the networks are covering this again; in our area they had dropped the coverage for the car ride.

The stories told on FNC are heartwarming.

I think they probably can--just take them some snacks, maybe a disposable camera to take pictures? They'll be glad you took them.

RE: the funeral--how did "they" decide Pres. REagan's would be so big and in the National Cathedral and all that? Nixon was Pres., but they keep saying Reagan's will be the biggest since JFK's.

Nixon is the first one to decide not to have a state funeral in D.C.

On the History Channel the other night I saw that agent cry when he had to tell the president he could not horse ride anymore. The president tried to comfort the agent, knowing how difficult it is to give someone the news their independence is being taken away day by day.

Watching a grown man cry has always made me cry.

There have been 10 state funerals since the beginning; JFK's is just the last one we've seen.

This is why I think my Mom would have come around to conservatism. She was crying the day Reagan was shot and we watched together. Forget about it when the Challanger blew up, she was a basket case. I know she was a patriot as witnessed when USA won the hockey gold. She cried when Pope was shot but considered herself agnostic. The years before her death were hectic as my brother was in his late teen rebellion stage and I was moving on with my life and met my husband to be so we didnt talk as much as we should have. I was 22 when she died my brother was 17 and he was pretty bad from ages 12 on and there was not much time for me.

Im glad her and I share some similar traits as described above. I guess in hindsight she was doing her best to control my brother.

I'm not sure I will make it through this week. Every time I start to talk to tell my husband about the events I tear up and can't talk.

Thanks--I checked and you're right. Good for them.

I think their biggest challenge is that these Honor Guards do these well, but very few members have experience doing these state funerals as they happen so infrequently. IIRC, the last one was President Nixon's funeral in April, 1994. I also think that these Honor Guards aren't career positions but special duty assignments meaning that members rotate through frequently, usually two to four year assignments.

I'm sure that many former Honor Guard members are being mobilized to help and I'm sure many retired members with experience are being consulted to make sure everything runs smooth.

as I remember it, the road winds up to the top of the hill where the library is. there was nothing else on the hill when I was there - but I recall the security guard at the library telling me that the lease runs out in 10 years on the parcels of land below the library - so that homes might actually be built "below" the library.
