ROME — President Bush and Pope John Paul II (search ) met briefly for talks in Vatican City Friday at the start of the president's 36-hour tour of Italy.

The president nodded and smiled as he greeted the 84-year-old pontiff, leaning down to hold his trembling hands. The closed-door talks between the president and the Pope, who has expressed fervent opposition to the war in Iraq, were to focus on Iraq and the conflict in the

Compare and contrast this meeting with that of Clinton when he was president.

Bush showed great respect, and will actually listen to the Pope, as opposed to X42's shameful and disrespectful performance.

So you just 'assumed' all this?

I agree it is scripted, but I really don't think the President knew ahead of time what the Pope was going to say, nor visa versa.

It looks black, maybe it's navy, hard to tell. Probably not significant, just a subdued outfit.

It is the evident desire of everyone that this situation now be normalized as quickly as possible with the active participation of the international community and, in particular, the United Nations organization, in order to ensure a speedy return of Iraq's sovereignty, in conditions of security for all its people," the 84-year-old pontiff said.

Yeah the UN that was screwing Iraq over the oil for the last ten years

Pope lives in the same dream world as Kerry and the rest of the liberals

In the photo, notice the white-
robed Pope is the central focus,
and that's purposeful. Bush &
wife both wear dark clothing. She
won't distract from the Pope or
the President. Wouldn't be proper.

Now at a state social event with
Berlisconi, she'll likely dress
more colorfully. Different type
of setting...festive, upbeat etc.,
not religious or political.

I seem to remember reading that the hand picked successor to the Pope is a conservative African Cardinal. The Pope has made it known that this man should be next in line. Whether the euro-cardinals ignore this upon the Pope's death is the question.

As far as I know, popes haven't blessed troops for hundreds of years now. It is left up to the Bishops, and yes, our Bishops have blessed our troops when asked.

I doubt there will be any cartoons such as this after President Bush's audience with the Pope.

Hey Bill - this is your legacy - I doubt it was worth it........

Notice he said, "return" to "sovereignty"?

Iraq had "sovereignty", under Saddam?

Is the pope a victim of leftist propaganda? Or does he perpetuate the myth of Arab/Muslim/Islamic cult victimhood?

Sad. I suppose all men who are leaders are susceptable to the blackmail of the cults, ie, "speak against us, or fight us, and your innocents die".

Yes, I recall that info. It came out during the medical problems the Pope was enduring and the possibility that he might not survive.

That was before the WOT if I recall, and the European political landscape has certainly changed since then.

The selection event with the watching of the smoke will be a real hand-wringer, IMHO.

"I can no more retire than Christ could come down off the cross" [approximate quote]

I'm not a Catholic, but those words of faith and courage from John Paul II are inspiring. He's the real deal.

Yes, actually they did.

Don't let a legal technical term confuse the issue. The Saddam govt. was recognized as legal by the international community.

This has nothing to do with the fact that the government was evil.
