predicting more attacks in Saudi Arabia (generically, without specifics) is like predicting the sun rising.

Severe Skin Infection Spreads Beyond Hospitals

Before anyone gets too spun up on this story, there is a matter of politically correct omission here. The community that is experiencing a spread beyond the hospitals is the HIV infected gay community. They are more susceptible to everything than people with intact immune systems. Taken in that context, it is a non-story for most of the healthy people in the world.

Hopefully you're right and it is localized among that group. One of the kids my son goes to school with lost his dad about 8 months ago from the flesh eating disease. He worked down at the docks in NYC.

Interesting that a spanish speaking gang member fresh out of prison can learn the language well enough to speak it fluently. Those training camps certainly covered everything -- from bomb making to foreign language classes. Glad we shut 'em down.

From my earlier posts....this is the one of the areas where I have spotted the Large Red low flying helicopter a few times in the past month. East Coast resort town. Also, please note that this is one of the areas frequented on the week-ends by the Washington, DC crowd. Not a place where a person would normally be walking around with a briefcase to begin with. My personal opinion is that this is like the suitcases that were being found in parking lots about a week or two ago. Maybe more testing our response times, etc.

Briefcase Scare in Rehoboth (Delaware)

REHOBOTH BEACH, DE-June 1, 2004 — Police in Rehoboth Beach are questioning a man about the briefcase that forced the closure of part of Rehoboth Avenue for several hours this morning.

The case was left unattended at the end of the street near the boardwalk. City and state police converged on the site just before 6am, later blasting the case with a water cannon.

Police found a flashlight and several personal items inside.

Authorities believe the man they are questioning was the owner of the case.

Plot to blow up buildings is alleged

By LARRY MARGASAK
The Associated Press
6/1/2004, 12:53 p.m. ET

WASHINGTON (AP) — Jose Padilla, a detainee held in U.S. custody, was training to blow up hotels and apartment buildings in the United States in addition to a possible attack with a "dirty bomb" radiological device, according to government documents.

The documents, released Tuesday by the Justice Department, said that Padilla and an al-Qaida accomplice were to enter the United States through Mexico or Puerto Rico.

"Padilla and the accomplice were to locate as many as three high-rise apartment buildings which had natural gas supplied to the floors," the government summary of interrogations revealed.

"They would rent two apartments in each building, seal all the openings, turn on the gas, and set timers to detonate the buildings simultaneously at a later time," the papers alleged.

The documents said al-Qaida officials were skeptical of Padilla's ability to set off a dirty bomb but were very interested in the apartment operation.

Top al-Qaida officials "wanted Padilla to hit targets in New York City, although Florida and Washington, D.C. were discussed as well," the summary said.

Padilla was to conduct an Internet search on buildings that had natural gas heating, open a bank account and obtain documents needed to rent an apartment. The plot called for blowing up 20 buildings simultaneously, but Padilla said he could not rent multiple apartments under one identity without drawing attention.

Do you or anyone else know of a website that has basic first aid instructions? I've evaluated our emergency supplies & determined that if I'm not available, my family might not know just what to do for various injuries. I'm planning to order some books from Amazon, but thought in the meantime I'd try to put together some basic instructions for the more common injuries. I found a red cross website from Finland, but the translation is pretty bad so that'll probably be a last resort. Any ideas?

Additional information on briefcase on boardwalk in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware. Kudos to the alert newspaper delivery man who noticed and reported this odd incident.

Bomb Scare Closes Stretch of Rehoboth Boardwalk

By MOLLY MURRAY Sussex Bureau reporter 6/1/2004

REHOBOTH BEACH — The ocean block of Rehoboth Avenue and a block-long section of the boardwalk were closed for more than four hours this morning while Delaware State Police investigated a bomb scare.

Rehoboth Beach Police Chief Keith Banks said a newspaper deliveryman told police about 4:30 a.m. that he had spotted a man working in an open briefcase in a storefront. He said he saw wires and batteries inside the briefcase.

The state police bomb unit X-rayed the briefcase and found it had wires and batteries inside, Banks said. It was destroyed, but police later concluded it was not explosive. A second, unidentified package found in the area also was destroyed, he said.

Police are questioning a man they took into custody, Banks said. The street and boardwalk were reopened at 9 a.m. Link to Article
