BAGHDAD, May 26 (Xinhuanet) -- About 100 Shiite militiamen were killed in overnight clashes in Baghdad and the holy city of Najaf, a senior US military official said Wednesday.

Brig. Gen. Mark Kimmitt told a news conference that a "very large number" of militiamen were killed in 21 engagements in Baghdad's Sadr City and five engagements in Najaf.

He put the total number killed at less than 100, with about 30 people killed in the Baghdad's Sadr neighborhood, which is a stronghold of radical cleric Moqtada al-Sadr's Mahdi militia.

Sadr, who has led a six-week-long insurgency against the US-led occupation, is holed up in Najaf.

Dozens of people have been killed in violent clashes between theMahdi militia and the coalition forces.

Sadr is wanted to answer for charges in relation to a suspected murder of a rival cleric last year. Enditem

If these Sadr militiamen had any sense at all, they would get out of the Sadr militia. What can they be thinking? Day after day, their fellow militiamen are killed by the 10's and 100's. The supply is reported as being limited, around 2-3000. Are these guys that committed to some off-the-wall, egotistical, self appointed "cleric"?

Great news. I've noticed consistent progress in decimating this enemy, their original strength was estimated between 1-2,000. Has anyone been keeping a count of how many killed so far in the last 6 weeks?

Sadr's militia has nothing to do with the 18K worldwide AQ figure. He had at best 6000, most of those peeled off when it became clear that US troops could kill them at will - he is (was) down to 1000 or so, less and less every day. The Sadr problem will be wrapped up soon - the only question is how the media (and some freepers actually) will spin this into a defeat for the US.

It seems that the numbers have been escalating in some type of progression - maybe deliberate. Weeks ago it was 5 or 6 Sadr guys flat, then it was 30 or so, I remember a 61 Sadr guy flat day, now 100!

I imagine it kinds of depends on how long we want to stay in contact and carry on the fire-fight. I have read that these guys are not very disciplined fighters - that a fire fight with them is a bit of a shooting gallery for our guys.

Hopefully, some of these Sadr guys will be getting a bit discouraged and leave the way open to get Sadr himself and bundle him off to abu Graib.

The local population is evidently fed up with him. I think they would applaud his capture.
