Deliveryman: I Shot Man In Self-Defense(Fired from Pizza Hut for Saving his life from Thug!!)

A Pizza Hut deliveryman who police say fatally shot a man on the city's east side Monday night says he acted in self-defense.

Ronald Honeycutt, 38, of Carmel, says he had just delivered a pizza at the Oaks Apartments around 11 p.m. Monday when a man approached him with a gun.

Honeycutt (pictured, right), who was near his delivery van and had his own gun, fired 15 times at the man, later identified as Jerome Brown, 20, of Indianapolis. Brown was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

"The only thing I can do is protect myself, and if that means shooting somebody that intends to shoot you, so be it," Honeycutt told RTV6's Jack Rinehart Tuesday. "I'm sick of the crime and I'm sick of being victimized."

Honeycutt said that after the shooting, he picked up Brown's handgun and drove to a Pizza Hut, where sheriff's deputies took him into custody. Police questioned Honeycutt and then released him.

Pizza Hut, which has a policy forbidding deliverymen to carry weapons, fired Honeycutt soon after the shooting, Rinehart reported.

The county coroner's office Tuesday determined Brown died of multiple gunshot wounds.

Honeycutt said he used all the ammunition he had because Brown kept standing.

"The guy literally stood there the whole time with his arm up," Honeycutt said. "The whole time, I'm popping off rounds ... (and) the guy's still standing there after 15 rounds went off in him."

Honeycutt, who has a valid license to carry a firearm, said he planned to buy another handgun and go back to work with a different pizza business.

The Marion County prosecutor's office will review the case to determine whether Honeycutt acted in self-defense, Rinehart reported.

As others have said, Pizza Hit has little choice in today's legal climate. They are going to get sued for the shooting. They will probably pay the perp's survivors some danegeld to settle it too, since it will be cheaper than fighting it. I don't blame the company for that, since they are required to look out for the shareholders interests in today's legal climate.

I don't believe that the delivery guy will be hired by another delivery company. Its just too much risk, unless its a mom & pop operation. Hopefully some supportive citizen will give him a better job so he doesn't have to deliver pizza.

Also noted that at least one article said he needed to buy another gun. I assume the police confiscated his. Not sure what the policy is there, but when I was in the LA area, LAPD never returned a weapon, regards of source. Now there is a good reason to hold a bake sale.

.40 S & W??!! For wimps

Not so Jim. I use the S&W .40 for stopping power in self defense. The last statistics I saw had the .40 S&W loaded with COR-BON 135 GR with 97% - 98% "One Shot Stopping Power." Your .45 Auto is a fine piece and with a 230 GR Hydra-Shok or a 230 GR Gold Saber will give you a 93% to 94% "One Shot Stopping Power".

The added bonus with the .40 is that my wife and kids can easlily handle this gun also.

Time to re-evalute that whimpy 9mm, I wouldn't get caught dead with it, pun intended.

The 9mm is a good gun with the right ammo. You need to load it with COR-BON 115-GR JHP+P for maximum "One Shot Stopping Power" (91%).

I'll stick with my .44 mag, when you care to send the very best.

I agree that the gun saved his life, but he should not be rewarded with special privileges afterward.

The only special privilege he had afterward is to still be alive. Just what special privileges are you talking about?

Quite a few years ago a deliveryman from Dominos was fired for using a handgun to protect himself. I have never bought anything from them since then and I shall now add Pizza Hut to the no-buy-from list.

.40 S & W??!! For wimps!

A real he-man's (or she-woman's, in today's society) round is the classic .45 ACP. 230 grains of jacketed hollowpoints, such as Federal Hydra-Shoks do just fine.

With the lethality of the 40 being about 90% of the 45, but a magazine carrying 20%+ more rounds, a mag full of 40 is more lethal than a mag full of 45.

Unless we are talking about single shot defense pistols. ;-)

"If he didn't get fired the company would have to allow all employees the ability to register for a carry permit."

The company has no say about any person registering for a carry permit.

The company has no say about any person having/maintaining a carry permit.

The company should not have the ability to infringe on a constitutional right of the employee.

We need to stop allowing arbitrary institutions to usurp our rights. If the employer does not want you using force to protect their property or money, that is their choice.

When the employer believes that they can tell you not to defend yourself to protect your LIFE, that is a problem.

You have all missed the winner. 44 Special from S/W loaded with a 250 grain Simi-Wadcutter. After six shots is the perp is still standing you can run up the barrel and hide.

Deliveryman: I Shot Man In Self-Defense

If the pizza delivery guy had not been carrying a gun, we might be reading this headline instead:

Pizza delivery person murdered - Robbery is probable motive

The company policy says that employees are not allowed to carry guns. If he didn't get fired the company would have to allow all employees the ability to register for a carry permit.

What if the company policy said "no blacks" or "no women" or "no senior citizens".

Screw "company policy".

The use of private regulations is the way the Second Amendment will be made useless. Combine it with the increased technology and soon everywhere you go will be scanning you for weapons and our rights will be lost forever.

Yep. Companies can already run credit reports on you. How difficult would it be for them to determine if you have a CCW 'permit' or not? And then how difficult would it be for them to simply announce a "policy" whereby if you wanted to work there, you had to surrender your permit?

Tyranny is still tyranny, independent of who the "boss man" is. A tyranny ran by multinational corporations (which control the gov't) is no different than a tyranny ran by the gov't (which controls the corporations).

And before you folks start spouting off about "Free enterprise", it simply doesn't exist in this country except perhaps on very small and localized levels.

The gov't and large corporations have become incestously intertwined where one does the bidding of the other, and vice versa. Neither has any loyalty to the Constitution, America, or their fellow citizens.

May I suggest a .40 S&W COR-BON 135 gr with a 96%+ "One Shot Stopping Power".

Roughly the same as either a Federal 9mm 135 or a Remington 147 9mm, both of which probably have a little more penetration than the .40. The forty is fine if you like it; I prefer a 9.

If I was deliverying still, I'd carry the Kel-Tec .32 I carry now. Wasting rounds, as you say, is often more a sign of bad shooting rather than underperformance of the chosen round. And we don't know which handgun, though I'm guessing by the 15 rounds fired, it was a Glock. Cheaper hi-caps available, and Sigs are probably too heavy for pizza carry.

All the pizza delivery companies have the same policy because of insurance & liability issues. Customer relations also plays a part because many customers would be extremely unhappy if they knew pizza guy at their door was packing. It's a risky business, but the driver is supposed to give up all his cash to any thug who wants it.

May I suggest a .40 S&W COR-BON 135 gr with a 96%+ "One Shot Stopping Power". That should do the trick so he doesn't have to waste all of those rounds.

Better yet, he should get some more range time, shot placement trumps caliber.

"If he's acting in self-defense, he might shoot 1 or 2 bullets and run away. But he just stands there and fires off 15 rounds one after another. WTF?? Sounds like another trigger-happy NRA fanatic"

Sounds like, from reading just this article. But we weren't there in his shoes.

It's easy for us to be armchair quarterbacks.

Be careful not to rush to judgement.
