What an adorable fellow! I've always wanted one of these. Everything I read about them says they have every trait I love in my pet rats, but amplified. Smarter, more good natured and eager to please, and longer living. I'm glad to see them being trained and used to their potential like this...to them it's likely a grand game and loads of fun.

Ratbert bump.

What a very interesting article. Thanks for posting it.

My son has a Norwegian hooded rat. It's very intelligent and really really friendly. They make great pets.

The pouch rats are rather cute animals too.

Gotta cut/paste this and email it home for my son to read.

Finally, a use for 'Rats (Democratis Dimwittedness). I knew there was a reason there were so many of them.

Ironically enough, Gambian pouched rats were the species used in the recent version of Willard.

Wow. That is one big freaking rat! PETA would flip over this one for sure.

I'm sure that PETA would consider this a "specieist" remark but wouldn't you want the animal detector to trip the mine if it wasn't discovered. I would rather have the dog (or rat) trigger the mine than have some innocent person trip the mine as he walks in a field thought to be cleared of mines.

Thanks for the flag Fire. What a great story. Short lives the only draw back to rats as pets.

Seems like a job robots could do, robots not much bigger than pouch rats. A company of robots could sweep a width of path for any length and no bananas.

Up to 30 inches long...

Is that one in the pic just a baby rat, do you suppose? They're kinda cute.
