Sarin, Mustard Gas Discovered Separately in Iraq (no WMD, huh?)

A roadside bomb containing sarin nerve agent (search) recently exploded near a U.S. military convoy, the U.S. military said Monday.

Bush administration officials told Fox News that mustard gas (search) was also recently discovered.

Two people were treated for "minor exposure" after the sarin incident but no serious injuries were reported. Soldiers transporting the shell for inspection suffered symptoms consistent with low-level chemical exposure, which is what led to the discovery, a U.S. official told Fox News.

"The Iraqi Survey Group confirmed today that a 155-millimeter artillery round containing sarin nerve agent had been found," Brig. Gen. Mark Kimmitt (search), the chief military spokesman in Iraq, told reporters in Baghdad. "The round had been rigged as an IED (improvised explosive device) which was discovered by a U.S. force convoy."

As far as I've heard, it was just one shell... FoxNews estimates put it at 25+ years old.


The age doesn't matter that much. Whoever set-up the IED wit this artillery round knew "exactly" what they were doing.

Artillery ordinance is clearly marked as to its type and composition, regardless of what nation manufactures it. Lot and date codes are essential information that's also included.

The shell was reportedly 155mm ordinance. That's designed for long-range artillery, NOT the smaller caliber mortar tubes carried by a three-man team.



Let's examine another question. Why did this show up NOW ?


It repressents partial (political vindication) for Bush.

I believe the Iranians-Syrian-Franco-Russo-German Axis is getting pretty damn nervous about the SUCCESSFUL Anglo-US Irqai mision.

Their recenty "defeated in detail" Falllujah counter-offensive against the U.S., plus Bush's recent Syrian trade embargo, points to heavy covert diplomatic-military action against the enemies of Iraqi Democracy (gleaned from Wretchard).

The (recent) appearance of chemical weapons in Jordan, and now in Iraq, point to a dangerous escalation by ALL sides.

Fortunately, WE will be victorious.

Don't worry about the media...they're already describing it as a non-WMD attack because this type of round is considerably more dangerous when used as designed...as an artillery shell.

Two weeks ago, U.S. military units discovered mustard gas that was used as part of an IED. Tests conducted by the Iraqi Survey Group (search) and others concluded the mustard gas was "stored improperly," which made the gas "ineffective."

I'm glad Iraq isn't ISO-9000 compliant.

Bush is feeling the heat...we'll "discover" more..the right wing media will spin for the administration..the fear factor will go into affect... and Bush's numbers begin to climb. Lets just hope thinking minds prevail here. We knew there were old weapons around.. but thats a far cry from an immediate threat, active weapons programs, supplying the terrorists with WMD's. WE supplied the terrorist with WMD's.. both in the 80's, and now with a total failed policy in Iraq, anything that wasn't destroyed by the inspections is up for grabs by anyone who finds them. We went to war because we were 45 minutes away from a chemical attack, nuclear attack, and Saddam was supposedly giving arms to terrorists. That has all turned out to be a lie. We have created more terrorists in the last year than we could have ever imagined existing prior to this mess.

This makes me wonder what happened a couple weeks ago when members of the Iraqi Survey Group were killed in the explosion. It sounds like Gen. Kimmitt let the cat out of the bag even though the adminstration was keeping things quiet for some reason.
