Torvalds claim to "invent" Linux probably false, says new study

Fri May 14, 5:49 PM ET

Washington, DC (FeatureXpress) May 14, 2004 - Popular but controversial "open source" computer software, often contributed on a volunteer basis, is often taken or adapted without permission from material owned by other companies and individuals, a study by the Alexis de Tocqueville Institution finds. Among other points, the study directly challenges Linus Torvalds (news - web sites)' claim to be the inventor of Linux (news - web sites). In one of the few extensive studies on the source of open source code, Kenneth Brown, president of AdTI, traces the free software movement over three decades -- from its romantic but questionable beginnings, through its evolution to a commercial effort that draws on unpaid contributions from thousands of programmers. Brown's account is based on extensive interviews with more than two dozen leading technologists including Richard Stallman, Dennis Ritchie, and Andrew Tanenbaum.

It's funny how no one wants to take their foot out of their mouth...

Oops. I'm removing my foot as I realize that in #132 I say that I am disputing that MS contributed to the ORG. That is wrong and should read I am not disputing that MS contributed to the ORG...

Rofl. I keep thinking of that quote from JFK, "Don't you get it.. It's an enigma wrapped inside of a riddle.." LOL. The only original piece that they can claim to themselves that they didn't build from something else or steal from others to create. And it's Bob.. I can think of so many things now - remember the Bob room on EFNet years ago where you could join the room and it was just one big battle of nonsense.. If you changed your name to BobXXXXX you could join the room, get mod priveledges and abuse each other. It was surprisingly mindlessly fun and funny and everyone remembers that Bob event with fondness. But nobody remembers MS's Bob event. It's like dog poop on display on a white entry hall carpet - steam rising and the unluxuriousness of it's Quaff lingering.. Then comes to mind Elwood Blues - 'We'll talk to Bob'. Even there, Bob didn't really matter too long. Must be a Bob thing - nah..
Rofl

I'd join and raise you again; but I'm momentarily at a loss for long acronyms that dutifully stand in statuesque manner giving tremendous humourous impact; but, if I could stack the letters that high, they too would just double over laughing at what was said. Bob would laugh too; but, nobody can find him.

Hey HAVOC how come no one will admit they were wrong about the million dollar donations? I enjoy FR for many reasons, and I understand many of the big egos around here, but tell someone they are wrong and link them to proof all of a sudden it's like a ghost town around here.

PS this isn't directed to you personally.

And without IBM taking huge chunks of Unix and porting them to Linux...

I knew that was coming...

So where's all of the SysV copied code then? Santa's pocket?

How many years has MS been doing this BS? It isn't working any more. Linux installations are up. Windows sales are flat. You'd better phone your buddy Steve and tell him to save his money for the next SCO bailout.

Might be a good idea to learn linux too LOL.

Woodman, I'm not psychic; but, I am experienced with people who can't admit when they're wrong. I'm experienced with people who will lie boldly in the face of hard evidence showing them a liar. Some people think their beliefs are stronger and more real than reality - screw with their beliefs and it destroys them because they have no moral grounding or too much pride... At least there isn't 20 of them in here descending on you to wear you down and run you off or at least try to find a way to nullify your impact. Try arguing in the religious subs. There are those, of a religion to remain unnamed, that have that science down to an art form.

Some people for whatever motives, cannot admit when they are just flat wrong.

they are heavily into IP protection since before it became an issue with the software industry

So maybe we have a chicken/egg problem. Maybe MS isn't funding them to make them do favorable reports, but to keep alive an organization that already had a favorable viewpoint and ensure continuing favorable reports.

Wise words. I'm going to get some sleep (I don't have the energy to Freep all night). MS, Gold Standard, WOD, Religion etc all seem to bring out the worst in some people around here. Good night.

Could be, I not trying to deny that. I just would love to know the level of support. FWIW it looks like the ORG leans heavily Democrat, I know that Bill is supposed to be a strong DEM supporter (although for the life of me I can't understand why, it's seems more than a little sadistic to me). So I just wish the supporters of Post #87 would admit their error.

I don't know about VMS having a lot in common with Unix.

But Windows NT (and therefore 2000, XP, and 2003) has some common roots with VMS.

The architect of Windows NT was Dave Cutler, who happens to also be the architect of VMS. Gates hired Cutler after he left DEC. There used to be a book available on Windows NT internals that points out the things the two OS's have in common.

Here's an article about the history.

Indoctrination is a form of protection from the truth. Some will literally cover their ears and scream to keep the words from reaching them audibly. I have a quote from a priest stating 'black is white if my leader tells me it is so'. There is no secular way to penetrate that easily. So your statement is a general truism.

NT and its descendants to this day have been what I call VMS in a hurry! No command line interface (MS DOS? You've got to be kidding), no multi-version file system, no batch processing ability, no multi-user access and so on. Bring back VMS, please!
