I honestly never heard of foot and mouth disease as a childhood disease myself. I always thought it was an agricultural disease.

A U.K. webpage claims humans are not susceptible to "foot and mouth" or "hoof and mouth", but may carry it. I was confusing "foot and mouth" with the more common "trenchmouth" a.k.a. Vincent's angina. Trenchmouth is common in people with poor oral hygiene and weak immune systems. See link for more info.
