I can't figure why he's free.

Unless we're handing him over to the Iraqi's to deal with. (In which case he'll probably go free.)

'Person Of Interest' Held In Car Bombing

Richard Thompson KIRO 7 Eyewitness News South Sound Bureau Chief

POSTED: 5:18 pm PDT May 20, 2004

OLYMPIA, Wash. -- Police have arrested a person of interest in a car bombing that shook downtown Olympia and frightened a lot of people earlier this month, KIRO 7 Eyewitness News has learned.

The arrest followed a police chase that ended with the discovery of additional explosives.

Police said they were conducting surveillance on a person of interest in the Olympia bombing. When the man noticed police, he tried to run, but he didn't get far.

Police from Olympia, Thurston County, the State Patrol and the Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms converged on a home after a man they were chasing ditched his van in the yard and ran.

After the man was arrested, officers found what appeared to be an explosive device and bomb components in his car.

Two week ago, a bomb caused significant damage to a car in downtown Olympia. The car's windows were blown out and part of the metal doors were destroyed.

The man, who is 38, is being held on seven outstanding warrants, including charges of arson, domestic violence and drug possession.

Israeli official says detentions of 2 men ‘comedy of mistakes’

Source: Johnson Sity Press
Published: May 20, 2004 Author: Ron Scalf
For Education and Discussion Only. Not for Commercial Use.

ERWIN — Two Israeli nationals turned over last week to officials from the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement office will be transferred from Knoxville to Miami today to face a possible deportation hearing, an official at the Israeli consulate in Atlanta confirmed Wednesday.

Almaliach Naor, 19 and Shmuel Dahan, 22, both of Tel Aviv, Israel, were arrested May 8 near Flag Pond after taking Unicoi County Sheriff Kent Harris on a 2 1/2-mile high-speed chase in a moving truck. Harris held the duo in the Unicoi County Jail without bond after consulting with the FBI concerning possible espionage.

In his office in Atlanta, Aviz Ezra, Israeli deputy consulate general, called the entire episode “a comedy of mistakes,” emphasizing Israel’s partnership with the United States. “We have a Hebrew saying that in translation says: ‘When a cow has its first-born calf he wants to create something. . . make some noise,’ ” he said.

“There was absolutely no conspiracy involving these two men. No real threat to the United States. Not from Israel. America and Israel don’t have a lot of friends. But America and Israel have always stood together.”

Ezra criticized Harris for being overzealous in his investigation. “He’s an elected official, and this was a sexy case,” he said. “But in the end (there was) nothing to it. “It’s not my case, but my office got involved with the situation because of the nationality of the men,” he said.

“They will have to face the (immigration) charges. They will have to pay their fines and deal with the INS. You deal with these kinds of things in my position from time-to-time.”

Ezra suggested Harris shouldn’t have talked so freely with the press. “I don’t blame you. You’ve got a job to do. He’s an elected official, and he should not be making statements that he was sick to his stomach when he saw a ‘learn to fly’ brochure (it was a business card) and talking about a nuclear plant (NFS) being close to where these guys were stopped.”

And, would Harris do anything different?

“Absolutely not,” he said. “I would have done the same thing. Anybody this suspicious found three miles from a nuclear plant, you have to use extreme care. If you don’t you’re not doing your job.”

The FBI later cleared the men after failing to find them on any federal wanted lists. Harris turned the two over to immigration officials after it was discovered they were working in the United States without permission while in possession of tourist visas. They had been stopped driving a 25-foot Ryder truck filled with old furniture at a high rate of speed.

The two men said they were taking furniture to Boston from Plantation, Fla., and had reportedly been living in an apartment in Miami.

Last week, after being appointed local attorneys, the two paid small fines and court costs on misdemeanor charges of littering, producing a false ID and evading arrest. They steadfastly denied throwing anything out of the truck, but Harris said he could produce witnesses to the contrary.

Harris said several “red flags” went up during his investigation that produced a false driver’s license, a “learn to fly” business card in one of the men’s wallet and a vial of an unknown substance reportedly thrown out by one of the men during the high-speed chase. Dahan reportedly surrendered an ATM bank receipt at his booking showing a bank balance of more than $11,000 in a Florida bank. It was returned to him following his release.

Ezra said the men’s families were concerned and upset concerning their situation in the United States. Harris said it was his understanding the two would most likely be deported back to Israel in days to come.

“They are here illegally,” he said. “You can’t be a foreign national with a tourist visa and work in the United States."

Army does about-face on call-up readiness
An erroneous order for veterans to pick a Reserve or National Guard unit by Monday produces a flurry of enlistments
Wednesday, May 19, 2004
RON SOBLE

SALEM -- Thousands of recent U.S. Army veterans nationwide were told to choose by Monday a new assignment in the Army Reserve or National Guard -- meaning a potential return to active duty -- or the military would decide for them. The Army now says the order was a mistake.

The consequence of the error appears to be a sharp increase in enlistments in Oregon and elsewhere by reservists who feared being assigned a unit without their consent. They face possible deployment to the Middle East.

I sincerely hope Sheriff Harris doesn't take too much grief for his "overreaction." In the times we now live in, I'll take his "comedy of errors" any day, because it shows me that he was being vigilant (unlike many instances pointed out here on TM).

And just because they are Israeli doesn't automatically give them a free pass. I'm sure any American in Israel who acted in such a manner (fleeing police, immigration violations) would have to answer for their actions as well.

Preparing for a terrorist attack

Sights and sounds of emergency

May 19, 2004

Albany - A simulated terrorist attack in south Georgia. This day long drill put extreme pressure on emergency crews.

The anti-terrorism drill was the first of it's kind at the Marine Corps Logistics Base. The scenario tests emergency crews' reaction time to multiple injuries and fatalities caused by a chemical bomb.

A simulated bomb exploded in a white truck around the maintenance building on the base.

Classified Data Missing From Los Alamos Lab (again)
new mexico channel ^ | 5/20/04

Posted on 05/20/2004 10:21:19 PM EDT by knak

LOS ALAMOS, N.M. -- Some classified information is missing at Los Alamos National Laboratory on Thursday.

A lab spokesman said the data was supposed to have been destroyed and cannot jeopardize national security.

The material is part of what the lab calls "Classified Removable Electronic Media." According to lab spokesman Kevin Roark, the information is still unaccounted for.

The National Nuclear Security Administration said it is sending a review team to Los Alamos to look into the incident. The missing item is described as a recordable data storage and retrieval device. Roark said lab employees conducting a re-inventory of classified information could not locate it.

The lab issued a statement that said the item in question was slated for destruction in March as part of an overall effort to reduce Classified Removable Electronic Media.

The Los Alamos National Lab is famous for an espionage investigation that grabbed national headlines.

Former Los Alamos scientist Wen Ho Lee (pictured below) was arrested in December 1999 and accused of transferring nuclear secrets.

He was indicted on 59 felony counts, but pleaded guilty to only one.

Lee was released after serving nine months in solitary confinement.

There was another security investigation at Los Alamos that made headlines last December when several lab employees were placed on leave after an inventory check revealed that ten computer disks were missing.

Those items might have contained classified information.
