ATHENS, Greece (AP) -- Police destroyed a small time bomb found near a major complex for the Olympics.
The device, blown apart Wednesday in a controlled explosion, appeared similar to alarm clock-triggered bombs that damaged an Athens police station May 5, police said.
The bomb was found along one of the city's main roadways about a half-mile from the second-largest Olympic sports complex, a seaside venue set to stage baseball, basketball and field hockey events.
The group Revolutionary Struggle claimed responsibility for the three blasts earlier this month in a declaration that denounced the stringent security measures for the Aug. 13-29 games.
Authorities have been on high alert since the bombings -- which caused minor damage and no injuries -- but say local extremists pose no serious security threat for the Olympics.
About 70,000 police officers and soldiers will patrol Athens and Olympic venues during the games.

I don't know- I had never seen one like that before. From where I was at the time (looking at the city from the 9th floor of a parking garage on Spruce) ---the firemen put the cooler into the firetruck. The cement colored- very low (bus?) with the tiny square windows had pulled in front of the firetruck. The street would have been....16th or 17th and Spruce. An ambulance was also there.
Usually, if an alarm goes off in that neighborhood- the people are evacuated while the fire department is notified. The people wait outside while the firemen go in. It was so odd. There were NO people evacuated from the building when the fire truck and ambulance (and then cement looking truck/bus) pulled up....?
Motorola was used in NYC too during 9/11.

MiG-27 missing from Hasimara (India)
Statesman News Service SILIGURI, May 19. — A MiG-27 of the Indian Air Force went missing today during its flight to Bagdogra near Siliguri from the Hasimara air base in the Dooars.
Though IAF officials at Hasimara and Bagdogra are tight-lipped about the incident, it is learnt that the aircraft might have gone missing within a 50-km radius of Siliguri. The aircraft reportedly took off from the Hasimara air base at about 11.55 a.m. and was supposed to reach Bagdogra at about 12.20 p.m. While unconfirmed sources said a pilot officer, Mr Sinha, was flying the aircraft, IAF officers declined to confirm. Neither did they confirm whether the aircraft was carrying any arsenal or not. “Considering the speed of the aircraft and from the time it got delinked from air traffic control, it is feared that the incident occurred within a 50-km radius of Siliguri,” a source in the IAF said.
Another speculation is also at work. “There is a possibility that owing to inclement weather, the aircraft may have overshot its destination and entered Bangladesh, which is very close to Siliguri,” said another source. Although IAF officials are maintaining silence over the development, it was learnt that all police stations in the region have been alerted about the incident and a search operation is on.
Wing Commander SN Mukherjee said that last call that was received at Air Force base in Hasimara was located somewhere near “Chicken’s neck’’ which is located near Nepal, Bhutan and Bangladesh border, the Army top brass has already informed Nepal, Bhutan and Bangladesh governments.

Seamen Seized in Eritrea (East Africa)

Nine Kenyan seafarers are feared to have been kidnapped off the coast of Eritrea. The identity of the hijackers and their motive, however, remains unknown. Also hijacked alongside the Kenyans is a Tanzanian, Ali Mohamed.
They were identified as Mohamed Yusuf (captain), Twalib Mohamed, Athumani Bake, Munguni Zuberi, Mohamed Mzee, Athman Rutu, Mohamed Amani, Badi Maalim and Shekue Kassi. They were aboard an ancient Arab dhow that has reportedly been sold to an Egyptian company called Masterline. The vessel was seized last week.
Maritime experts in Mombasa described the incident as unusual as pirates are not known to operate in Eritrean waters. The Seafarers Assistance Programme (SAP) Kenya co-ordinator, Mr Andrew Mwangura, said in Mombasa that the vessel christened Mv Faza was in Eritrean waters when it was seized .It is feared that the crew has no water or food. Mwangura said the vessel left the port town of Lamu on April 27. "The new buyer in Egypt was intending to convert the vessel into a tourist shuttle," Mwangura said. It had arrived in Eritrea on May 13.
Mwangura said SAP had al alerted the International Maritime Bureau's Piracy Reporting Centre in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, as well as Kenya's Ministry of Transport and Communications. The harbour master at Kilindini and the merchant shipping superintendent have also been informed. Mwangura has appealed to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Ministry to take up the matter with the Eritrean Embassy in Nairobi. Link to Article

White: “What do you see in the future?”
Mohamed: "Muslims will strike the US very hard repeatedly where portable nuclear, chemical and biological weapons will be used in massive suicide attacks carried out by sleeper cells in the US. Whether these attacks will begin before the presidential election depends on various factors. The outcome of Mubarak's upcoming visit to Washington in April and that of the G8 summit in June will determine whether America will be struck before the election. If the West is not dissuaded from implementing the Greater Middle-East Reform Initiative (GME) which would result in removing the existing Arab regimes, then America will be hit before the election, possibly in September and October. The immediate aim of the strike is to intimidate Bush causing a failure at the poll and to set Kerry up to win.
Mubarak, on behalf of Arab rulers who resist GME, visited Italy, France and the UK in the beginning of March to try to dissuade them from joining the US in the GME and in the war against terror. Before he went, the authorities in France and the UK were directed to several decoy bombs and threat notes placed in remote spots along their railway tracks. The French and British were not impressed enough and Mubarak went back home empty-handed on March 9. A couple of days later, however, Madrid train bombings took place, Aznar was wasted and the new government is pulling out of Iraq and deserting the war against terror. When it gets as bad as it can get over there the speculation will be wide ranging from nothing to total capitulation. With a liberal government seated in power what are they going to do? There will never be a clear cut enemy to place a finger on. The terrorist cells are there, in the U.S., waiting for the signal to begin, not only Al-Qaeda and Hamas but also Islamic Jihad and a wide assortment of sub-groups.
The rest of the world will be mired down deep in this Jihad; Paris and Berlin are not going to be exempt from this coming terror. A Polish press report says Al Qaida terrorists may have obtained a significant quantity of nuclear and biological materials from the SoIntsevo organized crime group.
The newspaper Wprost reported last month that Britain's MI-6 intelligence service provided the intelligence on the Al Qaida effort.
The reports raises new worries that the terrorist group may attempt to launch a weapons of mass destruction attack on a European city such as Warsaw or London.
The report said Al Qaida terrorists recently held a 'summit' near the Polish-Ukrainian border with Chechen Islamists.
According to the report, the effort to acquire nuclear or biological materials was organized by Semen Mogilevich, considered a major Russian organized crime figure and head of the SoIntsevo group.
DEPARTMENT OF HOMELAND SECURITY ANNOUNCES NEW MEASURES TO EXPAND SECURITY FOR RAIL PASSENGERS
New Directives Call for Immediate Action from Commuter, Transit and Inter-city Rail
(Washington, DC) May 20, 2004 - The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) today issued Security Directives (SD) requiring protective measures to be implemented by passenger rail operators. The measures instruct commuter, transit and inter-city passenger rail systems to comply with requirements that range from removing or replacing station trash cans to utilizing canine explosives detection teams.
The directives, which will be administered by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), were signed today and take effect on May 23. The directives apply to all passenger rail owners/operators. These include light rail systems, inter-city passenger rail systems such as Amtrak, commuter rail operations such as the Maryland Rail Commuter and Long Island Railroad, as well as subway systems nationwide.
"Millions of Americans travel by rail every day and recent world events highlight the need to ensure they are kept safe from acts of terror. These protective measures, along with others already in place, advance our mission to ensure rail passengers are protected," stated Asa Hutchinson, former DEA adminstrator and currently Under Secretary for Border and Transportation Security at DHS.
The mandatory measures cover a broad range of security issues and provide flexibility to meet the specific needs of rail operators. They substantiate existing best practices in the rail industry and will ensure enhanced security across the nation?s passenger rail systems. The directives require rail operators to take a number of steps, among them:
1) Rail owners/operators must designate coordinators to enhance security-related communications with the TSA.
2) Passengers and employees will be asked to report unattended property or suspicious behavior.
3) At certain locations, operators will be required to remove trash receptacles, except clear plastic or bomb-resistant trash containers.
4) When needed, canine explosive teams may be utilized to screen passenger baggage, terminals and trains.
5) Facility inspections will be conducted by rail operators for suspicious or unattended items.
6) Rail operators will ensure that security is at appropriate levels consistent with the DHS established threat level.
The protective measures announced today are the latest in a series of initiatives DHS, the Department of Transportation and the industry have put in place to strengthen rail security. These measures include:
* Assessing new technologies at the New Carrollton, Md. Amtrak and Maryland Rail Commuter station
* Conducting comprehensive vulnerability assessments of rail and transit networks that operate in high-density urban areas
* Training for rail personnel in preventing and responding to potential terrorist events
* Allocating over $115 million since May 2003 to improve rail and transit security in urban areas
* Developing new technologies including chemical and biological countermeasures
