In his latest election-year stunt to undermine the Bush administration -- and our national resolve to finish the job in Iraq -- John Kerry has launched a petition calling for the resignation of Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld. Kerry claims that Secretary Rumsfeld should be held personally responsible for the actions of a few soldiers in Iraq's Abu Ghraib prison who humiliated a group of the captive terrorists in their search for "actionable intelligence." This is the same John F. Kerry, by the way, who has alternately employed claims of his Vietnam wartime heroism and wartime criminality to catapult himself into the highest echelons of public life over the past three decades. Kerrys irrational call for Rumsfelds resignation, harkening back to his days as a Vietnam War protestor, is anything but out of the ordinary for the "gentleman from Massachusetts." His campaign claims that petition has received about 250,000 signatures. Act now to refute this political folly and support Secretary Rumsfeld.

I haven't seen it, but I'm not surprised. The resignation is on the table as far as Pinch Sulzberger is concerned. I've spent the past two days doing everything I can to get more people to sign, and I'm far from done.

I heard a disturbing rumor (on Hogue's show) this morning that Rumsfeld is considering a resignation he deems that his presence now will do more harm than good in the ongoing struggle. That is why he is visiting the troops today. I scribbled of a hand-written letter to him with a picture of Kieran basically reminding hime that WE need him as much as the troops do and that his resignation would mean the destruction of our resolve. His responsibility is to this nation as represented by my child, and not the political indulgence of fools in Congress and the press. I dropped it in the mail on my way in.

Just a reminder that in the age of email and digital petitions, and hand-written note may actually be worth the couple of minutes it takes to write and a 37 cent stamp. Rummy, it seems, is the one in whose hands this decision rest.
Petition signed and spread. Keep up the tally!
