German soldiers who are in relationships with each other will be able to sleep together in barracks and on foreign missions.

Peter Struck, the defence minister, said the new guidelines applied to homosexual as well as heterosexual couples. They were necessary to reflect "social normality".

Their first mistake was allowing unmarried heterosexual couples who were "in a relationship" to sleep together.

It's all downhill from there.

Had they kept to the "marriage" standard for sexual relationships, this would not be an issue (at least not yet).

There are alot of angles to this entire story. They fired the previous defense minister because he wrote a couple of articles for $ (not donating the money to the political party as they mandate). The current defense minister is more or less a political lacky of the liberal left...most of the German Germans laugh about the guy. The German military has no power with the current government and the number of budget cuts currently underway...and the ones expected within the next four years...will disolve most of the German military. By 2015, they will be able to react to floods and emergencies inside of Germany and almost nothing else. The Greens and the liberal left have been very successful at taking down the German military. They deserve all of the "credit".
