I have shared it with people before, but again, the very first time SOD Rumsfeld "got my complete attention" was at one of the initial press briefings as the war against the Taliban thugocracy in Afghanistan was getting underway and the press was starting their standard "undermine the American nation at every opportunity" campaign once again.
He was fielding a question from one of the press jackals about Osama Bin Laden and American policy and he shot back, "It has been the policy of the United States government to find Osama Bin Laden dead or alive. Preferably dead!"
Or words pretty close to that. I fell off my chair. After eight years of Clinton press BS and double-talk, Rumsfeld was like getting a bucket of ice water dumped on you.
I would strongly urge the Bush Administration to continue defend Rumsfeld vigorously.
Vigorously!
Secretary Of Defense Donald Rumsfeld:
America's answer to Osama Bin Laden, et.al.
GO RUMMY!!
"We take the world like you find it; and Israel is a small state with a small population. Its a democracy and it exists in a neighborhood that in many -- over a period of time has opined from time to time that theyd prefer it not be there and theyd like it to be put in the sea. And Israel has opined that it would prefer not to get put in the sea, and as a result, over a period of decades, it has arranged itself so it hasnt been put in the sea."
"There are many people in that part of the world who'd love to shove Israel into the sea, and not have it be there, and until people are willing to accept the presence of Israel, Israel obviously is not going to be able to make a deal."

Listening to taped portions of the Rumsfeld hearing tonight, my mind somehow conjured up a vision of a lion being interrogated by a swarm of self-righteous gnats. In some ways its unfortunate that we here in America dont live by the law of the jungle. Here in America many of our progressive definitions and legalisms require that the lions hands be tied, and the gnats be provided with microphones. And only those who can see through that surreal arrangement realize where the real courage and integrity lie.Thank you.

Like the job he's doing so far. Keep it up.

These sour libs have been trying to get rid of Rumsfeld from the beginning, when they realized that he runs intellectual rings around them. He knows that they don't know what they know when they think that they know it...
... and it drives the Left crazy.
We love you, Rummy! The enemy fears you! And the friends of the enemy want to help by eliminating the threat.

"I dont believe these hang-wringers. Not for a moment. I believe that the huge majority of leftists see these reports as a chance to get the President. And they have six full months until November plenty of time to build this prison abuse crusade into a Watergate II. Their anguish and discomfort was short lived, at best (completely non-existent, at worst) and was replaced by a rubbing of the hands together in a flash vision of the distinct possibility of enlisting the complicit media in an event that may eventually be dubbed Abu-Ghraibgate (i.e., the partisan tarring and feathering of a President for an occurrence which, if perpetrated by one of their own kind, would have resulted in merely a yawn and an Ive got more important things with which to concern myself. Stop bothering me with insignificance.)" - Excellant. I agree, the Democratic party is not interested in making corrections. They are clearly trying to get Donald Rumsfeld to resign, and use that resignation against Bush in the up coming election. I'm getting a little tired of the democrats hyperbole.
Bunch of bloviators.
Possibly some of the military folks should be reprimanded, and whoever was in charge of staging the photos punished.
Having said that, I don't think Rumsfeld survives this onslaught. As I type this, one of the democRat committee persons is asking him to resign. This will continue unttil he does.
Republicans have been down this many times road before...and the conclusion is always the same. They will cave to the Rats, and Rummy will step down.
No doubt in my mind.

Rumsfeld is one of the most capable SecDef we have ever had.
We are all lucky that he is willing to serve. I don't think there's a more capable man for the job alive.

Excellent analysis Joanie. Especially the lion and the "self righteous gnats." That sure paints an accurate picture!

I have more respect for that man enduring what he did today. He is a better person than I.

The abuse and pictures of it are reprehensible and the individuals involved (inluding those who actually did it, and any who may have ordered or influenced them to do it who were in any way in their command chain or involved in preparing prisoners for intererogation) should be tried and severelly punished as soon as possible.
From all I can see, that is exactly what is happening and what has been happening from the military's perspective for several months. Theior own investigations and actions reflect the absolute fact that the behavior was fairly localised and will not be tolerated.
It was the military, responding to allegations of abuse, who began the review/investigation process and the replacement of leadership back in August of last year. It was the military who held a news conference in Baghdad in January of this year to announce details of the allegations and the investigation. This is not new news.
What we have here is the release of photos that were included in a secret report on the investigation by a news agency. The reason for the classifed nature of the pictures and investigation is clear due to the fact that the events took place in a war zone where active fighting is continuing and where the ability for enemy to capitalize on this relatively localized and small event (not diminishing the seriousness of the specific abuse) are extreme. This release is being used in the extreme not only by our enemies, but also by political opportunists and detractors of the President's Iraq policy during an election year.
That, IMHO, is the real fuel for the extreme hoopla and calls for resignation, etc.
Lieberman and Sessions both gave excellent mini-speeches at the beginning of their questioning. Byden and Kennedy in particular were using the event as pure political hacking...and given their own backgrounds it was as clear a case of gross hypocracy and opportunism as you will ever find...not taking into any account the safety or welfare of the 99.999% of the troops in Iraq who are in harms way and sacrificing valiently for our own security and the liberty of most Iraqis.
Rumsfeld, Meyers and their subordinates performed with integrity and distinction in front of the detractors and opportunists who in effect are aiding and abetting the enemy with their unvarnished politicizing of the events.
That's my read on all of this Joanie. Thank you so much for your own excellent analysis.

>>I want to let Secretary Rumsfeld know that I support him each and every day. I'm not the most eloquent FReeper out there, but these are my sentiments.
I'm in the same boat. I can't even fax. But Rumsfeld's the best.
Just wish he and the rest would quit treating the Dems like loyal opposition, worthy of respect. They're not. The Bush administration is getting gnawed to death by rats.
To: Momaw Nadon
Rummy can hold his own against any cr@ap the dems care to dish out. This guy won't back down. Thank God for someone who won't crumble when the heat is on. The dems must be really desperate for the vicious attacks to the Bush Admin of late. Sorry the Iraqi pics aren't that big a deal. Stupid, but not that big a deal. This is war people! What I would like to know is where they came from and have they been doctored. Go Rummy.....Go Bush.

If there was ever any doubt that God favored the United States that question was answered when George Bush won the election AND Don Rumsfeld was appointed Secretary of Defense.
I can't even imagine where we would be with Algore.
