Rumsfeld: President concluded GC did not apply to detainees in Afghanistan. But we would treat humanely consistent with GC. Made a distinction re Al Qaeda. Everyone detained in Iraq prisoner of war -- GC applies. Detainees treated under a different provision of GC but have rights.

Lieberman: Then guards were not properly trained or properly disciplined?

We heard from a freeper soldier the other night who told us how low the morale was right now because of this incident and their fears they will all be painted with a broad brush by the military and then mistreated when they come home.
