"there is not one single active-duty FReeper who is not totally sickened by these events. HUGE majority of the vets, too." The ones who aren't just haven't taken time to read the report, LC.
Thanks for your post, pard.

TF, it's one heck of a long read...most investigative reports of this nature are! But this link is to the report based on Army Regulation 15-6 investigation of the 800th Military Police Brigade and BG Janice Karpinski. It lists the names of the perpetrators, the prisoners, and some of the soldiers/sailors who did things right by bringing forward their concerns over the behavior of the MPs.
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1130271/posts
An excerpt, LC, regarding one of the major findings by LTG Sanchez against BG Karpinski:
______________________________
1. (U) On 19 January 2004, Lieutenant General (LTG) Ricardo S. Sanchez, Commander, Combined Joint Task Force Seven (CJTF-7) requested that the Commander, US Central Command, appoint an Investigating Officer (IO) in the grade of Major General (MG) or above to investigate the conduct of operations within the 800th Military Police (MP) Brigade. LTG Sanchez requested an investigation of detention and internment operations by the Brigade from 1 November 2003 to present. LTG Sanchez cited recent reports of detainee abuse, escapes from confinement facilities, and accountability lapses, which indicated systemic problems within the brigade and suggested a lack of clear standards, proficiency, and leadership. LTG Sanchez requested a comprehensive and all-encompassing inquiry to make findings and recommendations concerning the fitness and performance of the 800th MP Brigade. (ANNEX 2)
2. (U) On 24 January 2003, the Chief of Staff of US Central Command (CENTCOM), MG R. Steven Whitcomb, on behalf of the CENTCOM Commander, directed that the Commander, Coalition Forces Land Component Command (CFLCC), LTG David D. McKiernan, conduct an investigation into the 800th MP Brigades detention and internment operations from 1 November 2003 to present. CENTCOM directed that the investigation should inquire into all facts and circumstances surrounding recent reports of suspected detainee abuse in Iraq. It also directed that the investigation inquire into detainee escapes and accountability lapses as reported by CJTF-7, and to gain a more comprehensive and all-encompassing inquiry into the fitness and performance of the 800th MP Brigade. (ANNEX 3)
_________________________________
19. (U) I find that individual Soldiers within the 800th MP Brigade and the 320th Battalion stationed throughout Iraq had very little contact during their tour of duty with either LTC (P) Phillabaum or BG Karpinski. BG Karpinski claimed, during her testimony, that she paid regular visits to the various detention facilities where her Soldiers were stationed. However, the detailed calendar provided by her Aide-de-Camp, 1LT Mabry, does not support her contention. Moreover, numerous witnesses stated that they rarely saw BG Karpinski or LTC (P) Phillabaum. (Multiple Witness Statements)

There is much sadness and shame in the ranks today. The hatred we feel for these animals is palpable for what they have done to us. We don't blame the press, or even the Liberals for this one. We blame those who DID IT, and we also realize that all of us will have to carry a portion of the shame, possibly for a long time to come.Your complete post Long Cut is well put, well said. But let me inform you and please relay this to all your fellow military comrades, there is no need for you or any of the others to be ashamed. Think of and always remember all the good that you guys and girls have done.
The last paragraph of your post is the most sensible and true statement that I have heard since this mess has been in the media. We often times missed the truth or just refuse to accept the truth because we are too busy pointing fingers.
Again thank you for your service and please pass it on to others that the American people stand behind you guys 100%. Some of us our mature enough and understanding enough to know that there are some bad apples in just about every bunch.

I'm trying. Articles like this, and the response they generate, do not help much. I totally agree. I got pinged to this article twice. When I started reading it, I got pissed until I read your post. Thanks Long Cut, on this one we are thinking along the same line.

BUMP
I agree with your sentiments. I have heard some on talk radio (HOSTS!) defending this by pointing to the actions of the Iraqis and saying "it wasn't that bad".
I WILL say that the American soldiers who were captured, some of whom were killed, had their pants pulled down, and shown on television (last year) were also the victims of a war crime. The only thing I will bring up is that the media has ignored any followup on that story (and yes the media did characterize it as violating the Geneva Conventions at the time). Have those Iraqis been taken into custody? What is the state of their war crimes trial?
I will also say that the media is giving this election year coverage. There was a similar event reported last year with British troops simulating oral sex with the prisoners. It did not get this level of coverage.
I do not excuse the behavior of anyone involved in these crimes (or suggest that they did not really happen). I do point out the difference in coverage by the media regarding war crimes committed against the allies in this war.
The "insurgents" are terrorists who often don't wear uniforms and strike at civilians. As you said, they don't play by the rules. We do. We cannot stoop to their level but the media needs to be accurate in describing the attrocities committed by all combatants in this war. Otherwise the public will walk away with a biased opinion.

Beautiful post!
I think the world of all of you guys and it's a shame that a few miscreants can cast such a bad light on so many who don't deserve it. (The media has been helpful in that as well.)

Tonkin, thanks for the ping. I read the article before I read Long Cut's response. I was so disgusted I almost didn't bother reading any further. Then I went ahead and read a few of the early responses. That was depressing. I was beginning to think I was the only one here with any morals. I skipped ahead to Long Cut's response that you pinged me to, and I'm so glad I did. My faith in humanity is restored. Long Cut, thanks for taking a stand.

MEG if you pinged me, thank you very much. I receivd other pings to this article also. But I started reading from the very beginning of it and was turned off until I read Long Cuts post. That made my day. Frankly I had backed off from reading the threads about this subject in disgust and actually had logged off. I logged back on when I heard about the car bomb tonight at the Green Zone.
What the hades is the following about?
U.S. Demands Retraction for Abuse Photos
Wed May 5, 8:15 PM ET
By MAAMOUN YOUSSEF, Associated Press Writer
CAIRO, Egypt - The U.S. Embassy demanded a retraction Wednesday for photographs published in the Egyptian press that it said were faked pictures of American soldiers sexually abusing female prisoners in Iraq.
But editors of two of the three publications involved said Wednesday they saw no grounds for a retraction. The editor-in-chief of the third publication, Al-Wafd, was not available.
"We have done a thorough investigation of the origin of these photos and have conclusive evidence that they originated on a pornographic Web site," the embassy said in a statement. "They are clearly staged photos, done by actors, as the site itself states."
"Their publication needlessly inflames an already heated atmosphere," the statement added, referring to Arab outrage over the revelation last weekend that U.S. soldiers had sexually humiliated male prisoners in Iraq. The U.S. television network CBS broadcast photographs of the abuse at Abu Ghraib prison, just west of Baghdad.
U.S. authorities have condemned the soldiers' actions and promised to bring them to justice.
The editor of the Egyptian weekly Al-Osboa, Mustafa Bakri, dismissed the U.S. Embassy's complaint. His newspaper published at least one photograph of a man, purportedly an American soldier, taking sexual advantage of a woman as one of a series run across three pages on May 3.
"We have published, maybe, one picture from the Internet, which was one of several pictures published by the media," Bakri told The Associated Press. "The kind of pictures on CBS made us believe that any other picture is authentic.
"Now the U.S. Embassy is speaking about pictures that were published only on the Internet. OK, let us agree on what CBS published, aren't they enough?"
The editor of Al-Mussawar, Makram Mohammed Ahmed, said he was not aware of the U.S. Embassy complaint. This week, his magazine published a picture of a partially naked woman with parts of her body blacked out.
Ahmed said he would not rule out that fake pictures were circulating.
The AP could not reach its editor-in-chief, Abbas el-Tarabili, on Wednesday night and staff at the newspaper said only he was authorized to speak about the matter.

I've little pity or respect for those acting or those acted upon. However, your "group shame" you can keep to yourself. I've no shame as the actions were not my own. Everyone accountable for their own actions.
You're playing a very liberal game with the manure you're pushing there!
To: TexKat
I had heard of this. They are taking pictures from porno sites and saying they are our guys. It's enough already.
I was looking for an example of Iraq terror and googled. It was a revelation how many sites(not iraqi) offered rape pictures, torture,it must be very popular.Gag I did not click on!
