I have waited and looked around and did not see this posted. NYPD and the FBI have found 5 empty identical suitcases in 5 different locations around NYC. Subway station, Penn Station, 2 government buildings and a sidewalk.
Also missing is a huge fuel tanker truck out of New Jersey that has vanished and was full.
This story was mentioned in the last hour...anyone catch it? The Fed's are thinking this might be a test run for terrorists to see what the response time would be to suitcases being left and found in a location ala Spain attacks. They also fear the gas tanker might be used to ram a building with explosives and level it.

So what did you think about abandoned backpacks that were on the trains in Madrid?

It's news if they find the "lost mates" to all my socks, gloves, and shoes in the baggage.

"More likely, thieves stole full suitcases that had been left foolishly unattended long enough to be stolen, and then discarded the suitcases after emptying them of their contents. " Why would they empty everything and discacard what they didn't want one place, and then take the empty suit case to another and discard it there?

Small aircraft have transponsers which can (and usually are) monitored by air traffic control.Till we reach over and turn them off. I am not doubting Julie's intent here... but I do hope we can limit the naive public's demand for such "cost-effective" solutions as making everyone else buy expensive electronics to track vehicles and film everyone's movements in public. GPS systems and transponders are easily disconnected. Was it still money well spent?

So what did you think about abandoned backpacks that were on the trains in Madrid? I think they weren't empty.
To: elfman2
It seems Ichneumon has the same mindset as the folks in charge of security of the Madrid trains. "Oh those backpacks probably belong to some drunk college kids. Let's leave them where they are..."
To: Ichneumon
And you don't think the terrorists made any dry runs in Madrid prior to their attacks, either?

Seriously, no one ever posted this little story. More interesting in light of 5 suitcases found in NYC area.
RE:Greyhound Rider In Hot Water
(Clinton, OK ) -- Police in Clinton are still not sure what to make of today's events surrounding a passenger on a Greyhound Bus and perhaps a bomb or two. According to Clinton Police Lieutenant Steve Moss, the Elk City police department called to say a passenger had left behind a small device at the Elk City bus station that might be a bomb. The Clinton police department went to the local bus station and made contact with the man and discovered a similar device in his backpack. The Oklahoma Highway Patrol Bomb Squad detonated the package which in turn caused a second small explosion. Moss says they're not sure why that happened but the man has been returned to Elk City for questioning. Moss says the Federal Bureau of Investigation and agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are handling the case.

Also, why wouldn't thieves steal the suitcase itself, if they are already ripping off all the contents? Unless the thieves now days prefer only nice leather luggage, and discard the cheaper canvas ones or something.

What is the point of a dry run? The systematic 'leaving of empty suitcases' only served to have them be discovered, and security awareness and future actions are increased. If this was a test, it was a useless one, because the test will change the circumstance.

That would be the Mob. In Nashville a few years ago, a warehouse full of DVD's and games was broken in to. The theives stole a semi and trailer and filled it up. About 2 days later the empty rig was found a a few miles from the Miami docks.
