TECH QUESTION for PC Builders!

Posted on 05/01/2004 11:24:06 PM PDT by Axiom Nine

For all you PC geniuses-

I'm building my very first system, and I'm now looking at Case and PSU options. I like RAIDMAX Cases, but I'm unsure of the stock PSU's which accompany them.

Does anyone have experience with Raidmax PSU's?

spend some money and get a quiet PSU. It's worth it.

Matrox video cards.

SATA drives.

ECC memory.

3ware SATA RAID controllers

I'll second that on the SuperMicro motherboards, and the Matrox video. But if you want FAST, dual Opterons and SCSI are the only way to fly.

Unfortunately, I already had dual Xeons and couldn't afford the Opteron changeover at the time. Next time.

Don't know about Raidmax, I'm a fan of Antech TruePower supplies myself. First thing I did to my cases was strip out the oem supply and add an Antech, after I learned the hard way when one of them bit the dust after 1 year and took the motherboard out with it.

I'm currently running one of these and it's unstoppable and utterly dependable.

Not cheap though.

Read this. It is a buyer's guide for building your own system and the case recommendation is great. I just built most of this for my roommate, and the case was easy to work with, has lots of air flow and fans, and just looks nice (even has a mutlicolor LED fan on the side!).

You won't need a 550W supply unless you're running MP and and HELLUVA lotta USB equipment right off the computer. Otherwise that is WAY overkill. Even 450W would be pushing it. Believe it or not a 400W is still very useful.

I agree with three posters above - Antec. In particular the Sonata. Well built, solid, nice.

I don't know about Tigerdirect - I recommend newegg.com. See their ratings on resellerratings.com. Accurate, fast, well stocked, low prices, ...

I prefer Chen Ming Dragon server cases when I build a computer, there is more real estate inside, and you can find them sold under various names at good prices.

Antec and Chieftec are all the same Chen Ming Cases.

Some even come with the Power Supply in them (Antec)

I've been a big fan of power supplies from PC Power and Cooling for quite some time.

Expensive, but VERY good. Terrific voltage regulation.

I build 4-5 new PC's each year for friends and family. I like the Antec cases. Most of the power supplies that come with them are very good and quiet. I buy tons of stuff from Newegg.com. Some of the best prices, low shipping costs, and good service. The Antec SX630 is a great case. I have built 3-4 PC's with them. http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=11-129-118&depa=0
