Notice to all Yankees ( Mississippi ranked least livable state 6 years running)
Google ^ | 04-29-04

Mississippi ranked 50th for the sixth year in a row. Other states in the bottom five were Tennessee, Louisiana and South Carolina.

For the 14th year running, Alabama has ranked near the bottom in a national survey of "livability" that measures each state's quality of life based on factors such as hazardous waste sites and the rates of crime, bankruptcy and unemployment.

Kansas-based Morgan Quitno Press ranked Alabama as the 47th most livable state.

The group found New Hampshire the "most livable state." Others in the top ten were Minnesota, Vermont, Iowa, New Jersey, Wyoming, Virginia, Nebraska, Connecticut and South Dakota.

That's more tables than a Baptist Dinner on the Ground

LOL!

I copied the list from http://www.statestats.com/sr04mlfac.htm.

It looks like their methodology is to rank each state in all of the factors and then average these category rankings to get a total ranking. As I stated in another message, it is biased towards high income/high price states because there are more positives associated with high incomes than negatives associated with high prices.

Ohio, #29 for two years running!

Have you actually been to New Jersey ? Most of it is actually very nice, much different from how it is portrayed by the media. It is also the 2nd richest state (per capita income) in the entire United States. If I recall correctly, 3 of the top 10 wealthiest US counties are in NJ. Overall, it has one of the best education systems in the country. I live there now and like all places it has drawbacks, it is very expensive to live here but it is far, far better than many other places I have been.

California was 36 and New York was 33. Hawaii was 32.

That doesn't sound too favourable to high-income, high-price states, most likely due to the high crime rates.

I can't believe MS hit the bottom of the list once, much less 14 years straight. I grew up in Mississippi. The land is beautiful, the people are friendly and life is slower paced than in most places. Sure California is pretty but there are the earthquakes, fires and I quess we can add oil spills to that. But you just can't beat driving through Mississippi on a hot southern day with the windows down and the radio on, driving past Magnolia trees taller than mountains, Spanish moss hanging from low tree limbs just above the water line on the winding creeks, stopping for a coke and peanuts, and having nowhere that you have to be... sorry, I was reminiscing.

The results of this survey look RACIST to me.

What is the minority percentage in the "worst" states verses the "best" ?

They are bright in New Jersey.. The educational system, paid for by Atlantic City, teaches all of their youth never to gamble.

They leave that up to all the degenerates in the border states.

View of Manhattan while driving down Skyline Drive, Ringwood NJ (trust me, you can see it when you're driving)

If you can afford it, and can handle it, NJ is the best state to live in.

This area is on the Wanaque / Ringwood border. Houses average around 300-350K and about 10K in property taxes per year.

We have a little saying here when we see those out of state charters heading toward Atlantic City......."cha-ching, lambs to the slaughter".

It's kind of sad really. We generally love tourists here. I just wish they would spend their money seeing other parts of NJ, rather than dumping it into AC casinos.

But hey it's a free country and it's their money.

I can honestly say that out of all the New Jerseyans I know, I can count on one hand, the ones who frequent casinos.
