Mississippi ranked 50th for the sixth year in a row. Other states in the bottom five were Tennessee, Louisiana and South Carolina.
For the 14th year running, Alabama has ranked near the bottom in a national survey of "livability" that measures each state's quality of life based on factors such as hazardous waste sites and the rates of crime, bankruptcy and unemployment.
Kansas-based Morgan Quitno Press ranked Alabama as the 47th most livable state.
The group found New Hampshire the "most livable state." Others in the top ten were Minnesota, Vermont, Iowa, New Jersey, Wyoming, Virginia, Nebraska, Connecticut and South Dakota.

"Seriously, 90% of the new people moving into this county are from New Orleans." That's why our livability rating in Louisiana climbed to 49...#8-)

"Notice to all Yankees ( Mississippi ranked least livable state 6 years running)" Yankee go home and take some of our proletarians with you. (Proletarians are those with their hands out ready to receive taxpayer largess.)

Quite a few of the positives relate to income, but only one negative (electricity prices) is affected by high prices. Thus high income but expensive states get a boost and lower income but cheaper states get knocked down the list.
What good is a $100,000 income if it will only buy a 800 sq ft condo.

No, I fled Lousyana as soon as I was handed my diploma at UofL Lafayette (it was USL in 1997).
I get depressed everytime I go back to visit my family in Lafayette. The whole state seems to be worse off everytime I go back.
Yes, other Freepers from Lousyana have attempted to slam me, but they seem to think that I wish for Lousyana to be as bad as it is. On the contrary, I wish for Lousyana to live up to it's potential. Instead, it reeks with dumbass populist who are still pining for Huey P. Long and the give-away crowd. Even worse is New Orleans. Definitely the toilet of North America.
Show me someone who wants to visit New Orleans, and I will show you someone who has never been there.
That should rile up someone!

This outfit ranked Massachusetts and Vermont the two "smartest states" -- what a joke.

Regarding your comment about the people, I couldn't agree more. I used to work for the State Chamber of Commerce as director of research. I constantly received phone inquiries from people outside of the state, and I can tell you that people from the South, particularly from places like Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, and Texas, were always the nicest, most civil people I ever dealt with.
And I know what you mean by mountains. I grew up on the SF peninsula, about 4 miles from the foothills of the Santa Cruz mountain range which runs up the west side of the peninsula. I now live in the Sacramento Valley, and I've never gotten use to the flatness.

"I occupy two homes in CA." Wow!
Enjoy your pretty homes while you can. We will still be here in the South when Kalifornia implodes.

Seems to me the aim of the ranking is an attempt to draw people to socialistic/totalitarian/progressive/taxeverythingyouown type states.
Be proud MS! I don't want all those non-duck-calling yankees to come and ruin my best hunting spots by scaring off all the waterfowl. From my experience those same folks shoot like my 8 month old too.

SD is a very bad, cold, snowy, flat, desolate, high-tax, high-crime place. Anyone viewing this thread that would ever think to move to this hell-hole, don't. It's awful. And tell your neighbors.

Easy. Louisiana still votes for 'RATS statewide. They have never elected a Republican senator since Reconstruction, and they voted twice for Bubba.

Sure Dakota is great....but if the Indian Reservation demographics were 40% of the population, it wouldn't be so bucolic and idyllic would it? You hit the nail on the head. If you remove the Delta from Mississippi then it would have ranked much higher.
