Mississippi ranked 50th for the sixth year in a row. Other states in the bottom five were Tennessee, Louisiana and South Carolina.

For the 14th year running, Alabama has ranked near the bottom in a national survey of "livability" that measures each state's quality of life based on factors such as hazardous waste sites and the rates of crime, bankruptcy and unemployment.

Kansas-based Morgan Quitno Press ranked Alabama as the 47th most livable state.

The group found New Hampshire the "most livable state." Others in the top ten were Minnesota, Vermont, Iowa, New Jersey, Wyoming, Virginia, Nebraska, Connecticut and South Dakota.

BUT - I will take my 2400 Sq ft, 4 bedroom, 3 bath house for $160K with $570 yearly taxes here in Alabama. Not to mention 8 golf courses within 15 miles, all of which I can play year round. :-)

You should keep that quiet, lest you risk a "Yankee Invasion".

When I used to work in NYC, I used to pay more than that in tolls and parking every month.

Unfortunately (or fortunately depending on your view), North Carolina is 45th on the list. Apparently the d*mn yankees haven't been following this chart. I think it's imperative we get this list to all the yankees possible and help them pack as quickly as they can. I also notice it's gone from 22nd most dangerous state in 1994 to 15th most dangerous in 2004. There's a correlation here somewhere.....

i've been to NJ and driven on the turnpike several times between DC and NYC. In addition, i've worked with a couple of medical companies for short projects. yes it can be pretty, it can be ugly beyond belief, newark is still there as I recall. driving on the side roads is an adventure and snow closes many places year after year. two blocks from the boardwalk and the casinos is an Atlantic city that few would want to be living. out side of these things, a corrupt political landscape and high taxes, i'd call NJ a wonderful place to live.

I was born in Vermont, grew up in Conn. and lived 20 years in south Florida. We now have lived in Knoxville, Tenn for the past 8 years. I can honestly say we love it here. Or kids have thrived here, Nashville is a great town to visit, and the Smokey Mts are one of the most popular destinations in the US for vacations. I for the life of me don't understand how Tn gets such a bum rap! No state income tax either and a fairly conservative place with two Republican Senators that,for the most part we can be proud of.

I hear you. My family has a long history in northeast Tennessee and when I have visited there, I have enjoyed it. I wouldn't want to live there though, because I am a true, native, Connecticut Yankee.

I like the cold. I like boiled meat - but I also like the best Italian food in the country outside of Queens. I like the fact that my brother is a commercial lobster fisherman and I can get 'em right at the dock. I like sticking my toes in the Atlantic in March, just to watch 'em cramp up, and I like that I can rake my own clams as the sun comes up and eat fresh chowder for supper that night. I like hearing the fog horn when I'm walking my dog late in the evening. I like watching a baseball game from the third baseline down at the beach with the incomparable beauty of Long Island Sound as the background. I like that my alma mater's basketball team can kick all y'alls asses :), and that it is still an aggie school. I really like the fact that most of you think that all of Connecticut looks like what you see as you drive through on I-95, because I know better. I like hooking into a 25 lb. chopper and fighting that puppy into the boat. I like that I live in a "shall issue" state. I like that I live in the lowest crime zone save one,for a mid-sized city in the entire country.

Sure, there's the problem of all these doggone liberals around here, but there is honor in being a conservative behind enemy lines - you just have to be an evangelist at heart. Yeah, I'd have to say that its pretty darn liveable - not that it isn't where everyone else comes from. :)

Hahahaha! "hell hole" I concur. And it has only gotten worse over the years. When I was there the mafia reigned supreme. I would imagine nothing has changed even though Carlos M. is no longer with us. The great N.O. government IS still with the living and I *know* it hasn't changed even though the names of the governing might.

All I can say is "Sweet Home Alabama"! (I like Mississippi too---even though it is the home of hoity-toity Ole Miss. Oxford *is* beautiful,tho.)

Wow! You sound just like me. Yes, I remember. They WOULD "vote for the crook," if given the chance. They mght do so, in fact, even if he was able to run from prison. I stood helpless and aghast at how they voted him in each time and how he--blatantly--took them to the cleaners in plain sight.

My favorite Edwards plot was against the oil industry; how he tried blackmail for a piece of the action, causing them to pull out in one week's time. I remember the boarded-up windows and massive unemployment, during the 80s and the Reagan boom.

You got out after going to college. You are smarter than I am, my friend. I went back a couple of times, in the hope that my resentment was mistaken, and regretted it each time. I wish I had learned the lesson, and trusted my instincts, as young as you did.

I guess I wished better for my home too. But, it ain't gonna happen. I still hear from friends and family there who swear the state is improving. But, I'm too old to fall for it anymore, since they know of nothing else.

Congratulations on the photos on your profile page. Thanks for showing me I'm not alone in my disgust for my home state's fate.
