The propaganda machine was having a field day strengthening that impression. They spent a lot of time making us look like bumbling idiots, so they could start comparing Falluja to Vietnam. Yeah, we will negotiate...and back it up with the unequivocal threat of devestating force if they don't settle down and play nice. We're the US, not the UN.

Yep, reporter on msnbc says that there were several large explosions on the southern side in addition to the helicopter raid on the northern side. The reporter speculated that the southern explosions were due to bombs from jets.

it seems like I heard some report describe the situation as "the insurgents fought the marines to a ** standstill ** and forced them to withdraw to the edges of the town. This is such a misrepresentation of the disposition there. It is more like an armed gunmen situation in a mall surrounded by swat teams.
