Specter Wins 51-49 Republican Senatorial Primary: live thread
4/27/2004 | self

Posted on 04/27/2004 9:10:16 AM PDT by rudy45

My apologies if a thread already exists. I did a search on "Toomey" and found nothing.

I arrived at my polling area (suburban Philadelphia) at 6:45 am to hand out palm cards. The weather is terrific this morning, but turnout (I thought) was light (I had to leave at 9:15, but will be back).

Actually, I have a good feeling about Pat.

"The dirty little secret is that Penn Pubbies are not that ideological, in an internecine sense."

Suspected as much, else how would the good people have gotten saddled with the likes of Specter, Rendell, and don't forget that paragon of RINO-tude, Tom Ridge.

Well, a dissapointing night, but we did learn a lot of things.

SurveyUSA is the #1 pollster in PA. For Pennsylvania numbers for the general election, look to SurveyUSA first.

Second, if former Governor/Lt.Governor Mark Schweiker ran for the senate against Specter he would have dusted him and Hoeffel in the general.

RINO Charles Dent is the Republican nominee for PA-15 replacing Toomey as congressman.

RINO Melissa Brown is the Republican nominee who won a close race; she will be facing Allyson Schwartz who used her urban Philly credentials to barely beart her opponent.

And Congressman Bill Scuster (PA-9) is leading by only 1,100 votes in his primary against a thinner and more handsome opponent.

That's precisely how RINOs govern, as if conservatives are the enemy."

Exactly. It sickens me that the Soros, Ickes and NEA-funded enemy of right-to-life, school choice, lower taxes, smalelr govt, Robt Bork and a host of conservative causes, ENDED UP WINNING A PRIMARY.

It's as if the voters had this choice:

Saint Francis

Satan

And said "yeah, we know who's better, but Satan is more electable"

SIGH.

Thins about this. Specter spent $11,970,396 and got about 500,000 votes. Toomey spent $3,854,400 and got the same.

So, each vote cost Specter about $24, and each vote cost Toomey about $7.

This implies the following: it's very cost-efficient to support a conservative challenger against a liberal incumbent, and it doesn't take a lot of money (relatively speaking) to unseat an entrenched incumbent.

I think conservatives all over the country are going to follow the Toomey model to go after incumbent liberals, and I think it's going to be successful.

Is the younger Shuster as corrupt as his conman father was? Bud Shuster made Don Sundquist look squeaky clean...

Zimmerman agrees saysing "That's Big Money and that money makes a difference in a race like this...at the state level."

WOW What a pile of RINO cr*p! Specter spent $9 million, Toomey $2 -3 million. Specter had *lots* of special interest money... who's the Big Money candidate, really???

"I know that George W. Bush needs to win re-election in 2004"

Yeah, and it is a DAMNED SHAME Bush tied himself to this aging RINO, who's an anchor around his feet. If he stayed out of the race, he could have had a dynamic young campaigner energizing conservatives to vote Bush/ Toomey.

Now he is running with a pol hack who's hacked off 1/2 his own party. GRRR.

This is a real SHAME.

There's a key word in there that I think Sphincter doesn't recognize...

"As I said before, the senate is too close to give up the given win in Novemember."

Ah, fresh RINO droppings, hot and steamy.

*never* call a victory of the AFL_CIO supported Specter a "win" for Republicans.

We are better off with Specter losing anyway, and Kyl becoming Judiciary chairman.

The PA conservatives did a GREAT job and they have an even better future to look forward to. The thing to do now is to make sure that PA does not fall into the dem column in November. By working with the party they can expect to get something back the next time they are looking to advance a candidate. Remember, Spector is OLD.

Yes of course you're right - even though as I pointed out elsewhere, Sphincter was part of "our" majority at that time, along with several others of his ilk that rendered even that majority rather meaningless.

[Bush just lost two Missouri votes in this family.]

Because of Pennsylvania? That's dopey.

No, it wasn't only because of Pennsylvania, and I admit that I'm frustrated and that I may come back. But, my disappointment in Bush is nearing critical mass when he actively campaigns for a liberal pro-abort against a conservative pro-life candidate. Now, Bush has to show me something new to get my vote. He has to actively earn it. I hate to see him have to waste resources on me - who was a lock - but he leaves me no choice.

I disagree with your "vote for Kerry" analysis because assuming you believe me that I would never actually vote for Kerry, I would be the same as someone who stayed home, the same way millions of Christians have done in prior elections. If Republicans want our votes, we are here, we are right here.

three good things to think about:

1 - retaining majority

2 - better chance of Bush win in November

3 - Specter will be eighty at the end of his next term. Toomey can use the name recognition he got in this primary to run when Specter retires.

"There's a key word in there that I think Sphincter doesn't recognize..."

LOL, I will never forget the story I read about Spector excusing himself from a Senate hearing in order to use the restroom. When he came back he had a 15 foot length of toilet paper hooked on his belt that was trailing behind him as he took his seat. I didn't see this myself, but I have read a few accounts of this event and I crack up every time I see Spector approaching his seat in a Committee

Right. All other things being equal, we can conclude from this that the price tag for unseating a liberal RINO in PA is about $4.5 million.
