Banja Luka: Q fever epidemic

An epidemic of Q fever has been reported in the area of Banja Luka. Since 7
May 2004, 75 patients with symptoms of Q fever have been reported, and to
date 38 patients have been admitted for treatment at the Clinic for
Infectious Diseases of the Banja Luka Clinical Center.

Dr. Zeljko Rodic of the Clinic for Infectious Diseases told the press that
majority of the patients are from the Banja Luka area, and 1 patient is
from Laktasi. He stressed that this is the largest epidemic of Q fever to
be reported in that country.

department has announced on Wednesday [12 May 2004] that the disease was
discovered in pigeons. Pigeons can transfer this virus, which is regarded
to be lethal for birds, to chickens.

According to an Ecuadorian newspaper, the health department in Chimborazo
Province (located in the Andean mountains) advised local medical personnel
that patients admitted from the town of Guamote presenting fever, cough,
enlargement of the lymph nodes, weakness and malaise, should be considered
as suspected cases of bubonic plague. This decision was taken after
confirming 3 fatal cases due to the disease in the last 2 months.

Bird disease reported in several valley cities

A bird disease, that has killed hundreds of mourning doves in the high
desert, appears to have infected some Coachella Valley birds, but, not in
particularly large numbers. The disease, called trichomoniasis, has killed
possibly thousands of birds in the high desert, Los Padres National Forest,
and Northern California, and is thought to have touched the Coachella Valley.
