A US geophysicist has set the scientific world ablaze by claming to have cracked the holy grail: accurate earthquake prediction, and warning that a big one will hit southern California by September 5.
Russian born UCLA professor Vladimir Keilis-Borok says he can forsee major quakes by tracking minor tremblers and historical patterns in seismic hotspots that could indicate more violent shaking is on the way.
And he has made the chilling prediction that a quake measuring at least 6.4 magintude on the Richter scale will hit a 32,000 square km area of southern California bt September 5.
The team at the UCLA Institute of Geophysics and Planetary Physics accurately predicted a 6.5 magnitude earthquake in central California last December as well as an 8.1 magnitude trembler that struck the Japanese island of Hokkaido in September.
A major quake will hit an area that stretches across desert regions to the east of Los Angeles, home to about nine million people, including the Mojave desert and the resort town of Palm Springs, which lies near the notorious San Andreas fault.

Do you consider this posting to be the moral-equivalent of a PDB? If so, what Justice Department lawyer wrote the legal memo covering your authorization to warn the citizens?

That's why I won't move there. If you get your biggie it's gonna reduce Bill Gates' property values.
A big quake could set off Mt. Rainier, and oh, brother... Don't blame you. And as they remind us, Rainier is not a dormant volcano. Besides, you don't want to move to Seattle anyway -- it's so gray and drizzly here. Every spring I have to remove moss from the house's exterior walls and the front walk. And before we had a house with a garage, my pickup. (Honest.)

Oh, gee, living in southern California is too dangerous...
You guys should move here to Tornado alley instead. At least you can see tornadoes coming before they hit you...

Yikes....our house is on top of the San Andreas Fault near the Pasadena border. WEll....I had better get the flashlights ready with fresh batteries....but where to store them safely is the question. We lost a porch and had some structure damage in the Sylmar and Northridge both!

Christopher Reeve is out of action on this one, no taking Margot Kidder and reversing the earths rotation. If Gene Hackman starts buying up desert land in anticipation of it becoming oceanfront property, head for the hills!

{{{Yes, it scares me}}} I've been as prepared as possible since my first earthquake, but you never get used to them. I love the post after your ping that says "hope it will be in the desert". Well, a lot of people live in the desert now, so it will not be a pretty picture wherever it hits.

Keep your shoes by the bed. Otherewise, there could be a lot of glass between your bare feet and where you last parked your shoes.
And stock up on velcro!

Nigel: ...the numbers all go to eleven. Look...right across the board.
Marty: Ahh...oh, I see....
Nigel: Eleven...eleven...eleven....
Marty: And most of these amps go up to ten.
Nigel: Exactly.
Marty: Does that mean it's...louder? Is it any louder?
Nigel: Well, it's one louder, isn't it?
Nigel: ...One louder.
Marty: Why don't you just make ten louder and make ten be the top number and make that a little louder?
[pause]
Nigel: These go to eleven.

"It's Bush's fault!!! Or will be..." I can see it now; the entire network of fault lines in the US, maybe even in the world, will be renamed.....the Bush Fault.

I read on internet of this movie...and sure it will be to Russian television in year or so...as much true American junk comes to Russian television...Zina and Hercuslak and other such truelly dumb shows....anyways, off on tangent...seems they show huge chunk of Cali falling to sea...never mind it is mountainous areas that fall. I have been to San Francisco...ok, I could see area seperating from mainland but sinking? Haha. Oh and seen some US airplane crash movies and one of island with volcano going and peoples trying to survive giant flying lava balls...must say, just like dumb asteroid movie with Bruce Willis...both volcano and asteroid had very good aim.

6.4 is NOT the big one.

Well, you're the first person I've run across to claim Hector Mine as part of the Los Angeles area, though I realize this guy is casting a wide net (again, playing the odds).
