For over 12 months I've been trying to explain this concept (the Bush doctrine) to people with varying success. This excellent essay clarifies the position with a well-researched historical basis.

Thanks! The only thing I might add is that the struggle to confront, worldwide, governments of force was born of the necessities of WW2 and of the post-war time, and that this doctrine was perhaps best expressed by Ronaldus Magnus.

I suppose our natural inclination as Americans is merely to let the light of our freedom shine merely as example rather than carry it forcefully around the world, but examples in history from Pearl to 9/11 show us that if the light does not erase the darkness, the darkness will seek to blot out the light.
