[history]
A man in Granite Falls, Wash., who slept with a pistol beneath his pillow woke up one morning last week to find the gun had gone off and shot him.
The Seattle Post-Intelligencer reported Saturday that the man, who was not identified, went to bed Thursday night with a loaded .22-caliber revolved tucked under his pistol. Sometime during the night, the gun discharged and shot him in the chest, but he apparently didn't realize he was wounded until he awoke early Friday.

. . . a loaded .22-caliber revolved tucked under his pistol . . . Yeah, it's a whole lot worse when those revolveds and pistols double team you. Add a pillow and it can be really series . . .
(How stupid is this reporter, and how much does he rely on his spell checker, forgetting it doesn't catch homynyms or misplaced words . . . ?)

Good thing it wasn't a .45. Or too bad, it might not have happened with the grip safety.
During those cool winter months here in Florida, we sometimes sleep with the windows open. I always sleep with a .45 in condition 3 under my pillow. Condition 3 is full mag, inserted but with an empty chamber. I do this because one cool winter night in 1996, I woke just in time to have to do hand to hand combat with the burglar worming his way inside my bedroom and my .45 was too far away in my night stand before he made contact. I was able to knock him back out of the window and then arm myself. But I was very lucky. If I hadn't had the alarm on, it might've gone the other way. I have severe sleep apnea, so I sleep with an oxygen mask and an air pump humming away. The "white noise" this produces keeps both my wife and myself in a pretty deep sleep.

I can't imagine what happened here. (OK, I got that "pistol" means "pillow.") But why o why did the gun go off? Was it a revolver or does the reporter not appreciate the difference? Can't imagine an uncocked revolver just going off for the heck of it. Is this a suicide attempt? Did he do something odd in his sleep? What?

I have a son who could wreck a junkyard with a rubber hammer and is always meddling with things, so my Sig P245 is in a small quick-release gun safe bolted to the headboard of my bed. It costs me a few more seconds, but I figure my Labrador Retriever will hold off any intruders for that period of time (by jumping up on them and licking them to death. Luckily she will "down" on command. I'd hate like heck to shoot my dog.)

I wouldn't hold my breath for an update to this story.
I doubt that even the Warren Commission could get to the bottom of this.

I blame it on the Gun Fairy who was confused by the configuration, likely thought it was a dreaded assault weapon (ugly beasts, those) and in a display of Dr. Zachary Smithism, badly mishandled the situation and called on the robot to fetch the shakydog to get 'em the heck out of there.

(2 million defensive gun uses a year. Tell that to the Gun Fairy who'd rather leave you toothless.)

No one that I am aware of ever woke up finding he'd been shot by a .45 and was surprised :)

One cannot help but suppose that consumption of an adult beverage played a role in this little event.
And imagine the awakening:
"Man, this is the worst hangover ever! I feel like I've been shot in the chest!"
To: dogbrain
That pillow won't be causing anyone any more trouble.

That was my first thought.
Maybe he's onto a new hangover cure:
"Take a .22 and call me in the morning."?

A REALLY good friend would have that pillow re-stuffed and mounted with a nice set of horns...

First of all, this reporter must be a liberal moron since he doesn't even know what a revolver or pistol is. This shows the weakness of a .22 caliber round; I'd laugh if a guy pointed a weak-ass .22 or .38 Special pistol at me. If you want to intimidate a burglar or anyone who wants to mess with you, get a .357 Magnum, .45 ACP or anything more powerful than 9x19mm NATO.

Smart weapons for idiots. LOL
AP Update - After shooting him, Mr. Gun snuck away and robbed a local convenience store. Witnesses report that the "assailant" was wearing a leather holster and crome pistol grip. The International Defamation of Inanimate Objects That Shoot (IDIOT) contends that the Mr. Gun is very dangerous and should only be approached by trained professionals. "If you see Mr. Gun, don't interfere" they warned, "merely report him to you local Intellectual Elite". The victim's immediate family is filing a civl suit against its own ancestors, seekng compensatory damages for passing defective genes down their line."

but he apparently didn't realize he was wounded until he awoke early FridaySure... I've tried that excuse several times in the past to explain away my self-inflicted gunshots, but my wife never believed me...
(um, actually, I don't have a 'revolved', or a gun, or a wife, for that matter - it was all merely a typo)
