I have advocated from the start, a complete disarming of the Iraqi populace in preparation for a lasting peace there. A number of people opposed this saying it was impossible.

We have no right to take away the ability of Iraqis to defend themselves with weapons. We wouldn't tolerate it if we were occupied, would we?

In my opinion we're talking apples and oranges here.

Any invading force into the United States would be seeking to conquer it for it's own personal gain.  The United States is occupying Iraq for it's own gain, but it is also an effort to help the Iraqi people gain a grip on their own future.  We don't seek to add their land to our posessions.  We don't seek to pilage their resources.  We don't even seek to control them in perpetuity.  We simply want them to develop a peaceful nation that can live peacefully on the world stage.

Compare this to an occupation of the United States by a Germany, Japan or China.  Do you see those types of occupations in the same light.  I doubt it.

In order for Iraq to be safe from a neighbor state, I support it having a viable military, one that answers to it's elected officials.  And if it's populace didn't contain a large radical element of former Republican Guard members, I would be more inclined to agree with you.  Sadly, US Troops and the developing Iraqi government itself, is exposed to insurrection on far to great a level.

While I support second ammendment rights for the Iraqis, it's a little premature to accord them the same rights as a fledgling United States in the late eighteenth century, or even the same rights as a nation of our stature in present day America.

Let Iraq stabalize.  Then allow the populace to own weapons.  I would personally rather them keep the weapons, if it weren't for our troops taking rounds in the back or being blown two stories in the air by bombs.

What violent clashes appear to have involved Sadr supporters?

In the most intense recent clash, Sadrists and gunmen loyal to Ayatollah Sistani engaged in an 8-hour gun battle October 15 over control of two key mosques in Karbala. One man was reportedly killed; Sadr’s men were ultimately defeated.

U.S. forces have been targeted in two recent clashes with followers of clerics tied to Sadr, according to the U.S. authorities.

On October 9, two U.S. soldiers were killed in Sadr City when a protest demanding the release of an arrested cleric affiliated with Sadr, Moayed Khazraji, turned into an apparent ambush of U.S. forces. Khazraji was arrested September 29 on charges that he was hiding weapons in his mosque and organizing anti-U.S. violence.

On October 16 in Karbala, three U.S. military policemen were killed in a firefight with the personal security forces of a cleric believed to be affiliated with Sadr, Sayyid Mahmoud al-Hassani. In early September, U.S. forces had killed three of al-Hassani’s men when a protest over the coalition’s searching of the cleric’s home turned violent.

To be sure, many of the Iraqis deserve the comments you made. There are other Iraqis as well. They want nothing more than to earn a living, provide for their families and live in peace. That's why I'd temper your comments somewhat.

I too have lost my patience with Islam, but the leaders we are setting up in Iraq are their Washingtons and Jeffersons. Some of the Iraqis are incapable of seeing what we are doing for them. Some of them will not buy into this program. It is our job to make sure their Washingtons and Jeffersons have a chance.

To that end, I support our troops and wish the Iraqi people a long and prosperous life under a benevolent government.

How much liberty did those guns buy the Iraqis before we showed up on the scene? Did you see Saddam and his thugs being picked off one by one before? Ever wonder why?

Look, we're going to disagree here. I'm not going to watch our troops be gunned down and blown to bits without seeking a way to stop it.

Those who are armed are taking out our troops, the ones who freed them from their former government. We would be disarming Republican Guard, not the average Iraqi that had no defense prior to this.

That's why you didn't see this before we came on the scene. The average Iraqi would be damned thankful to have his neighbors disarmed.

This is a war folks. Things like what happened on Sadar City tend to happen when a power hungry leader such as Sadar tries to impose his will on people. Sadar is a minor mullah trying to play on his dead fathers legacy to attain political power. He is not affraid to kill other more moderate leaders to attain his goals. He is prime for an all expense paid trip to GITMO. It will get worse before it gets better. Remember that Sadr is the type of person we are fighting against the type who will kill to attain their goal of domination.
