Cavett said this was the hottest political issue of the day, and that the audience was balanced and highly engaged.

This show followed Eff'ns testimony before the Senate accusing the American military of rampant war crimes. John O'Niell had served in the same unit as Kerry (except for a full year instead of three months) and passionately refuted Kerry's war crimes charges.

I was in the audience for about a dozen Dick Cavett shows. The audiences were classic NYC liberal throngs.

Cavett just read some letters reacting to an earlier show with four vietnam vets (incl John O'Niell). Lurch lumbers out momentarily.

Somebody should get this on network TV ASAP. O'Neill is eloquent.

O'Niell: "Never ... have so many been libeled by so few." (Referring to Kerry's 50 largely fake veterens.)

Wow! O'Niell was great. Big applause, over boos and hisses from the pro-Ho crowd.

O'Neil says that JOHN KERRY WAS QUOTED in a prominent news magazine in May that:
"War crimes in Vietnam are the RULE and NOT the exception."

John O'Neill won the coin toss to make an opening statement.
He lists the problems vets faced returning from their tours. The biggest problem by far? The lies spread by the likes of John Kerry tarring them as war criminals.
Boos mixed with applause from the audience.
I know I won't be able to take the whole thing.
Dick Cavett holds up Calgon (how well I remember those commercials).
Ack. Kerry up. Hard to find a place to start after a "barrage like that", he says.
So he's never liked a dissenting opinion from his own. Speaking calmly to show he's the rational one. He disses O'Neill by saying it's hard to believe he served (by Kerry's lights evidently if you served you'd automatically side with him). Uses an example of having a drunk mother, but I missed what that was supposed to represent. The U.S.?

So what's going on?Hard for me. TV's in a different room. OMG! Kerry in opening statement compared the United States of America to a drunken mother that needs to be "dryed out" and corrected. SERIOUSLY! (O'Niell had started by emphasizing points on which people of good will on all sides of the issue could agree with. Kerry started right in on the "immorality" of America.)
