What's your favorite flag of the world? Least favorite?

Some time ago, browsing through my friend's atlas, I realised that there are significant differences in quality between the flags of different countries. Some are good, some are bad. Some countries have clearly taken care in the choice of colours, layout, and design. Others have been lazy, stolen the flags of their neighbours, or just designed flags that are clearly supposed to cause pain to those who look at them.

To my surprise, there is no international body responsible for upholding simple standards of vexillilic aesthetics. Nor do the UN or Interpol have the power to call in and punish those responsible for such atrocities as the Brazilian or Cypriot flags. I suppose there is probably a conspiracy of rich western nations (those with permanent seats on the UN security council, no doubt) to prevent such crimes from being brought to justice; however, in the meantime I am giving letter grades to the existing flags of the world.

From onelook.com, an internet dictionary which includes descriptions from many well-known dictionaries:

***Sorry, no dictionaries indexed in the selected category contain the word vexillilic***.

After the US flag, I'd vote for the Confederate naval ensign, the flag of the UK, and those of Australia, Iceland, Norway, New Zealand, Chile, and Lebanon. For the best state flags I'd vote for Texas, Tennessee, Georgia (the new one, similar to the first official flag of the Confederacy), Arizona, California, and Alaska. The flags of Manitoba and New Brunswick aren't bad.

I like how distinctive it is and how artsy it is. You stick it with something else and you know exactly that it represents a Maryland-related object.

DOH!

Actually, I'm from Memphis, Tennessee myself...

Just been in and out of Brasil enough to pick up Portuguese.

Martin_Fierro, myself and several others have a lot of laughs and fond memories we toss around now and then.

Personally, sometimes I just get mad as heck they elected a known commie. Yet in all my experiences with Brasilians, whenever we had a good "heart to heart" it was never over politics. Usually it was over the quality of Cachacas or the local futbol team. The more interesting conversations revolved around exactly where we woke up that morning...

Still praying for Brasil...keep the faith...

I really must protest. Maryland's flag is neither a double for a car race flag or a quilt(although quilt is close). It is the two most prominent features of the family crests of the two men that founded the colony of Maryland. I don't live ,nor ever have lived in Maryland but one of those crests is my family's so DON"T DISS THAT FLAG! :-)

But back to the original question:

Best flag:(besides the U.S. which is a given) Union Jack

I also like Brazil's

Worst flag: the pansy blue flag of the U.N. I mean it just reeks of wuss.

Here're a couple of my favorite flags, in alphabetical order. Not basing my opinion on what they do or don't stand for, but rather how they look.

Bailiwick of Guernsey

Canada

China

Israel

Japan

Macedonia

South Korea

Switzerland

United Kingdom

United States of America

Vatican City

Honorable mention should be made of the two following flags. Not only do they have striking designs, but they also evoke a sense of dread and foreboding. The perfect flags for two of the most evil nations in recent memory.

Nazi Germany

Soviet Union

not quite a flag but I dislike this right now:

It is a motorcycle plate which was supposed to have an american flag motiff.
Instead they came up with this upside down french flag.
A good cause but a bad plate.
