FR DNS problems...
today | self

Posted on 03/25/2004 7:48:57 AM PST by general_re

DNS lookups failing for FR here - no such host. Apparently I'm not the only one, judging from a glance at the Yahoo FR board. Dunno if it's my ISP (Verizon) or what, but I had to manually edit the hosts file to get here. Presumably, if you can post, you're not having this problem, but there are more than a few people who can't post right now because of it...

That picture just didn't want to post.

That joke died the first time and I think I killed it three times.

The real problem is that some nameservers either cache negative results way longer than they should, or they simply don't respect the time-to-live for caching in the first place. It really depends on how often each individual nameserver is set to expire previous results and query the root servers once again. For some, that's as often as every four hours or so. For others...well, it could be several weeks before the "inactive" status is finally erased from the entire internet - it could be several weeks before the whole joint gets the inactive infomation, let alone the correction. That's why some people never have gotten knocked off yet - their DNS servers are/were still caching the old (but still valid) information, and hadn't (yet) been told to deactivate www.freerepublic.com. They may not ever get knocked off, if their DNS server doesn't query again until after the information is corrected anyway. Bottom line is there's no rhyme or reason to it - I'll still bet most people will be back up and running by tomorrow morning, but there's simply no way to know how long it will take to propagate everywhere.

Thanks for the explanation on why it will take so long to get everybody back on line. After this, I'll bet lots of folks will remember Freerepublic2 on Yahoo. (BTW, just doing a search on Yahoo for Freerepublic didn't get me to the site. Somewhere in my memory I brought up the "2" and got the message board.) Some bozo there thought it would be neat to post some anti-semitic crap and I emailed JimRob earlier this evening to delete it.

I just got back of FR thru yahoo.

I'm having trouble deleting my address history.

Seems that several items do not delete and I keep getting com.org instead of FR

I happened to have the Yahoo board bookmarked anyway, so when I couldn't get through, that was my first stop, to see if it was just me, or if others were having the same problem - which, of course, they were. After that, it was just a matter of bashing my way back in by editing the hosts file to avoid DNS lookups for www.freerepublic.com, which is how it's still running for me. Sigh. Nothing is ever simple, eh? ;)

Good advice, though - bookmark the Yahoo page, everyone...

I still have no clue what a host or dns is!

But, I appreciate all of your information. At least I know that I wasn't alone. :)

I've been on most all day thanks to the Yahoo info. Edited my hosts file to get it to work on both browsers I run. But I don't know what "DNS" means -- domain name server?

Exactly. Sorry. I get used to dealing with people all day long who know this stuff inside and out, and it's easy for me to forget that a lot of perfectly smart people don't know this stuff, mostly because they never needed to know ;)

We don't need to know, as long as you are here. :)

So, you'll be there, with bells on, the next time this happens, to walk us through?

Great! I knew we could count on you!

Latent Purgative

They were cleared from the bowels of FR.
