FR DNS problems...
today | self

Posted on 03/25/2004 7:48:57 AM PST by general_re

DNS lookups failing for FR here - no such host. Apparently I'm not the only one, judging from a glance at the Yahoo FR board. Dunno if it's my ISP (Verizon) or what, but I had to manually edit the hosts file to get here. Presumably, if you can post, you're not having this problem, but there are more than a few people who can't post right now because of it...

Am I the only one that thinks the Yahoo site is difficult to figure out/navigate?

It should not be a blow to your ego. You are usually on in the day time and many of us are night Freeps. (Usually because we have no lives)

No, you're not. I joined some time ago but don't have it bookmarked on this computer. I went to Yahoo and typed in Yahoo Free Republic and it showed 0 results.

I'm not real familiar with navigating it when I get there either, but I can read others talking about FR being down, and know it's not just me.

LOL. I've been trying to get mentioned on that site for days. I can't post there, so I might as well do it from here.

I call their 'Biker Bar' the Amen Chorus and FU is called 'Eight members is too many'.. well, not really but it works.

Okay, there is still some major league issues on my end - "blinking" accessibility. Still an error message for the regular address. I just thought you'd like to know... which you probably don't... 'cause it won't make any difference...

What the hey. I just wanted to feel important.

Sorry.

Well, as glad as I am to be of service to everyone, it didn't occur to me that I would suddenly be the most popular person on FR - my entire comments page is nothing but replies to me from this thread. Hope nobody else had anything important to call my attention to, since it may take me a bit to backtrack ;)

FWIW, Verizon's DNS servers here in NoVA still haven't been corrected, slightly more than twelve hours after I noticed the problem. That is, if I clear out the hosts file entry that's giving me the IP address and flush the DNS cache, I still can't get through to www.freerepublic.com. I was hoping that many, if not most, people would be back to normal by this evening, but it looks like it's going to take slightly longer than I thought for things to settle down - I wouldn't be surprised if there are a few stragglers who still can't get through to freerepublic.com a couple of days from now. In the meantime, people will probably continue trickling back as their ISPs get the DNS update or they discover the direct IP address from somewhere. Such is life, eh? ;)

i heard that one of the WHOIS phone numbers listed for FR was invalid. so someone complained to ICANN and that got the domain, but not the IP pulled

anybody who can confirm this?

Best thing to do is to eat before you go, it'll save some pennies.
