This is REEEEAAAALLLY getting ugly! It's going to be interesting to see how this plays out.

Liberals hate FNC with a passion. This is a snippet from a daily media email newsletter I receive:
Fox News Channel, then, is so far neither the choice of most people who watch cable news, nor the more successful business model. But the perception that Fox is "trouncing" CNN--based largely on the fact that the number Nielsen releases to the public emphasizes heavy viewers--is of great use to Fox, which trumpets these ratings as a vindication of its partisan, "fair & balanced" approach to the news. Reacting to a guest's charge that Fox had a right-wing bias, Brian Kilmeade, co-host of the successful Fox & Friends morning show (2/25/03), boasted: "Then what does that say about the country when they made us No. 1?" But even in the limited sense of average hourly watchers, Fox is only No. 1 among 24-hour cable news channels. Fox, like CNN, now reaches about 4 of every 5 television households, so comparisons with broadcast news shows are increasingly valid. And among all television news sources, Fox's performance is nothing to brag about.

They were permitted to fly in country during the embargo but did not leave the country until the embargo was lifted.
The in country flight was coordinated with the government and I think, contrary to Clarke, they were brought together for interviews before leaving a few days later--but that I can't be sure of. Perhaps later we can check on that, but I know they flew in country before embargo and out after it was lifted.

Yes - I heard the same thing about Fox asking the White House for permission - and the WH said that it was fine.

FOX broke journalistic ethics here. If this was an on the air briefing, they are free to re release it. However, it is extremely unethical to take a background interview and release it to damage somebody. Fox rec'd permission to use it

They won't be able to ignore it now.
Of course they will. The media can and do any damned thing they please. Lie, cheat, steal, make up stories, make up sources, commit fraud, pretend to be objective when they're partisan as hell, nit-pick everyone else's lives while keeping their own off limits. The big three broadcast networks and the vast majority of the so-called mainstream media want GWB out of power. Even as we watch and complain, they are openly doing everything possible to defeat him.

Fox asked permission from the White House. Perfectly acceptable behavior.

So background conference calls with what sounds like dozens of reporters can't be released to the public?
That doesn't sound right.
If an official wants to talk off the record, he/she generally goes to ONE reporter and says it's off the record.

Sorry. Background isn't speaking off the record.
There is too much d*** information given off the record, since the journalists are too lazy to get them to make it on the record.
And, Background interviews that were used today were issued by the WH with their permission, not Clarke's. Since he was their hound at the time, it was them he was talking with.
I don't see an ethics violation here.

I disagree here people. Fox news is our beacon of info. This hurts them. You do not reveal background sources, even if they are lying. You go to jail to protect your sources, you don't run bold headlines proclaiming the fact that you are outing a background source. They screwed up big time.

Can't imagine why.

When Lehman read some of Clarke's previous statement, did he include the statement in which he said that by the end of the summer the Bush Admin. had increased money for covert action five-fold? Seems this statement could easily be verified and if proven to be fact, it will dispute Clarke's claim that he was told what to say and prove that GWB was actively involved.

Kerrey showing his true colorsAmazing there was so much ELATION and APPROVAL of him (Kerrey) yesterday. One must always remember Democrats stick together, no matter what, principle be damned. Not so the GOP and there in lies our weakness as we stand proud and look in the mirror.

It was a briefing on behalf of the Whhite House. The White House gave permission to release it. They broke no ethics code. Clarke and Kerrey apparently think that those briefings are their personal property. They are wrong.
