March 23, 2004 -- WASHINGTON - John Kerry yesterday launched a new TV ad showing video of him as a young soldier in Vietnam and stressing he "fought for his country," as the Democratic nominee tries to rebound from President Bush's charges he's weak on defense. Kerry's new 30-second spot, which goes up today in 17 swing states, features video of a helmeted, rifle-toting Kerry in fatigues walking past what appears to be a thatched hut and also has a shot of Kerry being decorated with a Silver Star for his service.

Senator Kerry has what, four months (?) of military experience?

Four months in Viet Nam, somewhat longer in the military. Bailled on both as soon as he could find an excuse.

(Lib think on) But it SEEMED like a lifetime.(Lib think off)

Jeeze, four months in charge of a boat with a crew of six makes him more qualified to run the US than GWB?

The truth is, Kerry is really a summer soldier and a sunshine patriot who used his scratch wounds to flee the battlefield and join the other side.

Thank you for Serving.

Every time I read about how he's being all "manly" touting his Vietnam service, I see in my mind's eye that photograph of him catching a football.

That picture is gold. If I were running the President's campaign, I'd run an ad featuring that picture at every Ohio State, Michigan, Penn State, and Florida college home game on the Jumbotron.

Game over. Dang I wish I was more computer savvy, but watch... someone will post it for me. I depend on the kindness of strangers.

Please try to get on some shows and voice you displeasure the same way the "families of the 911 victims" did with Bush's add. One show would be Mitch Albom. He has a radio talk show from 3:00 to 6:00 pm. He is very anti bush.

Someone needs to make a copy of this ad and then do a voice over of Kerry's post Vietnam testimony before Congress where he admits to witnessing and committing war crimes.

The Kerry ad is so typical of his schizo self. He touts his war record but is proud that he threw away the medals representing that record.

Don't you mean, "GI Gigolo?"

Still trying to figure out why he was in the jungle with a rifle as a Navy lieutenant. Must have really beached that boat!!

I was wondering about the same thing. A .45 would be a lot more believable but not as visually appealing. That footage just has too much of a "staged" look about it.

One of the problems with talk radio is that callers voicing an opinion contrary to the show’s format are often cut off. Conservative talk shows generally have conservative listeners and liberal shows generally have liberal listeners. It is a case of preaching to the choir.

I do use my own local web forum ( Peninsula Exchange) as well as other forums to counter the left at every opportunity - and to occasionally hit the right when needed. It’s a pretty good way to educate people.

I often encountered people staging scenes for pictures to send home - not real combat types, but those stuck in large base camps and administrative areas.
I ran into a classmate at Tan Son Nhut airbase once. He had enough weapons and combat gear to outfit a squad. He was an Air Force mail clerk and never left the base.

"I'm guessing the video is the home movie re-enactment he filmed of him shooting the wounded NVA soldier."

Not many had the presense of mind to get themselves a movie camera, while in that country of Vietnam, to "REENACT", their gun fights for a future presidential run.

Apparently he continues to this day watching on his "Sony" his movies he made while building that legacy of "war" hero.

The campaign did not say where the video was shot in Vietnam, by who or when.

I once read that JFKII "ran" back to the PX and bought an 8MM movie camera to "re-enact and record" the time that he beached his boat and went after a VC the had fired the 'rocket' at his boat. Could the video be of Kerry, made by Kerry, for Kerry?

In the revolutionary war against the British we also had a great and brave general. He led troops in battle and distinguished himself greatly in the fight against the British.

He also distinguished himself in history forever when he turned traitor and fought against the revolution.

Benedict Arnold was the General's Name.

I was questioning this also. One of my best friends was a PBR skipper and he was a Chief. He told me in his squadron it was more the norm that officers never went out on patrol. But he did tell me the story of how one Lt. insisted on being taken on a patrol. They set up an ambush on shore and started taking small-arms fire. The Lt. bailed back to the boat and left all his gear for my friend (the Chief) to go back and retrieve. The Lt. in this case was basically a chickensh*t. This was the last time my friend ever took an officer out.

Not meant to be a general indictment of all brown water Navy officers, because certainly many of them spilled their blood bravely. But having an O-3 on regular PBR duty? It seems a little unusual.

I have asked this a few times, but what is that uniform Kerry wears in all of the VVAW photographs? Is it a Navy uniform?

This is really going to backfire. People learn of his VVAW activities-that meeting to assassinate Senators is really a revelation with Kerry attending those meetings it was discussed at and not reporting it, yet there was Kerry testifying and talking about American soldiers in Vietnam committing war crimes when he didn't even witness it and based it on lies to tarnish our servicemen over in Vietnam still. He is the most despicable man. And the ad says NOTHING yet again. Kerry doesn't have a record to run on because he'd like to run away from it, but it takes the mask off and the GOP and Bush campaign is doing a great job thus far in revealing Kerry. He is his own worst enemy.

Sorry, I don't have an answer for that one. I was never in-country. Off the coast was plenty close for me. The DDG that I was on wouldn't have done too well on river patrol. :=)

Notice he covers his war record of thirty years ago, not his legislative record. Does he not want it to become public? I say yes.
