Arafat: Passion of the Christ 'impressive'

Yasser Arafat watched Mel Gibson's The Passion of the Christ on Saturday, and afterward a top aide compared Jesus' pain during crucifixion to the suffering of Palestinians in the conflict with Israel.
Nabil Abu Rudeneh, one of Arafat's closest advisers, watched the film along with the veteran Palestinian leader and a group of American and European Christians and Palestinian Muslim clerics.
"The Palestinians are still daily being exposed to the kind of pain Jesus was exposed to during his crucifixion," Abu Rudeneh said in a statement after he viewed the movie.
Arafat, who watched the film on a small TV set in his Ramallah office, said the movie was "historic and impressive."
The visiting Christians, Anglicans and Protestants, were from the United States, Canada and Britain, said Palestinian legislator Hannan Ashrawi, who also viewed the film. Arafat's office did not further identify the delegation.
Gibson's film graphically depicts Christ's final hours. The film has been a huge box office success, bringing in hundreds of millions of dollars in its first two weeks in theatres in the United States and Canada.
The film has sparked controversy, and some Jews have said the movie will fuel anti-Semitism because it unfairly portrays Jews as the main force behind Jesus' crucifixion. Other critics have said the film is overly violent.

"Muslims do not believe Jesus was crucified... "
The Muslims honor Jesus as a prophet, but believe Allah substituted a look alike at the last moment to take Jesus' place. So it was not he real Jesus, but a copy who was tortured and crucified.

In the Mohammedan religion, it's OK to decieve non-Mohammedans for the purpose of furthering the Mohammedan agenda. They know Arafat is playing to a non-Mohammedan, Western crowd. You're absolutely correct that muslims are allowed to lie if it promotes Islam. I just wonder if this can be played to the Western muslims that aren't really familiar with the real tone and teachings of the Quran in a way that might shake them into evaluating the "truth" of Islam.

Arafat, who watched the film on a small TV set in his Ramallah office, said the movie was "historic and impressive."He really said that? Considering that the movie shows that there were none of these so-called palis in Israel back then, I'm surprised that he'd like the film...

The vast majority of Mosques in the US are of the Wahhabist brand.
The man who had to approve every Muslim Chaplain hire in US prisons was a Wahhabist, trained in Saudi Arabia. He worked for 20 years as the head of the Muslim Chaplains Association.
You will find little moderation in Islamic teachings in the US.

my impression was that there was a rank and file muslim in the US with no understanding of Arabic, and therefore they take the somewhat Westernized and sanitized translations of the Quran as accurate.
I am aware that Wahabbism is being spread through the prison systems in particular. I realize Bush needs to apply some level of control in his references to Islam, but I'm getting tired of the "religion of peace" trash...although, I haven't heard him utter it lately. I also wish the US would do something to help the Sudanese. The reports are horrific and have been for a couple of decades.

While the overwhelming majority of people now agree that the Passion is not antisemitic, Arafat is one who might actually complain about that.

"The Palestinians are still daily being exposed to the kind of pain Jesus was exposed to during his crucifixion,"Why do I tend to doubt this....I do admit that the people in that region...Jew or Arab don't have the best living conditions but to compair it to the scourging that Jesus went through is way off target.

Mohammedans really do not accept translations of the Koran.
For instance, in the Pakistani madrassas, children memorize the Koran in Arabic.
If one converts to Mohammedanism in a non-Arabic country, they would be taught Arabic, so they could read the Koran in it "original."

"In other words, Muslims believe Christianity is a sham."
True but so do all non believers. Remember the Jews condemn Christianity as a blasphemy. Mohammad rebuked the Jews in Medina for bragging about having killed Jesus. If it possible Arrafat can be moved by the movie then i will not condemn him for seeing the movie.

I've met many muslims that don't read or memorize the Quran in Arabic. And I know Christians who understand Arabic and the Quran better than many muslims as well.

he could use on jews or Christians,
or his own, so called "collaborators,"
i.e. anyone who disagrees with any smelly perverted idea of the gross pig, Arafat.
