UN administrators flee “Kristallnacht” | 23:46 | B92

PRISTINA -- Wednesday – UN administrators have abandoned offices in the Kosovo towns of Gnjilane, Prizren and Pec, fleeing what one UNMIK official described to B92 as “Kristallnacht”.

“Kristallnacht is under way in Kosovo,” the official told B92 on condition of anonymity.

“What is happening in Kosovo must unfortunately be described as a pogrom against Serbs: churches are on fire and people are being attacked for no other reason than their ethnic background,” he added.

Serbs and UN officers have been the target of attacks by Kosovo Albanians during most of the day and night. The most dramatic withdrawal was from Belo Polje on the outskirts of Pec, where UNMIK officials, retreating with Serb residents, where forced to shoot Albanian assailants in self-defence.

The Serbian Orthodox seminary in Pec has been razed, and Albanians celebrated its destruction by setting fire to the local church., said the UN official.

OH, OK. So I guess no non-muslim has ever had the misfortune of living as a second class citizen in a muslim state?
let me rephrase that:
Albanians (CHRISTIAN and Muslim) may be allowed to live, albeit as second class citizens."

We are neutral, we should not allow A to attack B or B to attack A.

No problem, even I had your opinions a couple of months ago, but thanks to some wonderful freepers I learnt that the Balkan problems are not so clear cut.

Why should we be there in the first place? Don't the Europeons have an interest in this? And why should they not be dealing with this?

I said nothing to defend Milosevic, I merely said that the U.N. was completely wrong about what they said. I believe the U.S. shouldn't have gotten involved in that on either side. And it is a fact that more people died and were misplaced on both sides, because of U.S. actions. For the most part, we bombed Serbs who had nothing to do with Milosevic anyway. And did we win the gratitude of the Kosovars? Mostly not. Not that we should have. Some of the people we were trying to ``help,'' were cohorts of the people resposible for 9/11, and bin Laden himself may have been in Kosovo around that time.

But really, could it be possible that there is a certain amount of fear, justified or not, living in close proximity to an Albanian population that by your figures is 70% muslim, given the history of Islam and its incessant need to subjugate non-muslims?
Not trying to justify the killing of innocents, just trying to see if you will except that the existence of such a population will in and of itself bring tension considering the historic perspective.

You are dead wrong. THIS IS A RELIGIOUS CLASH. muslims suck!

Oh, I agree that islam is evil. But, the Albanians are 30% Christian. How can you then call it a religious clash?? It may be Albanian Orthodox-Catholics-Muslims fighting against Serbian Orthodox if you really want to paint it as a religious clash.

Oh, you're right, non-Muslims are treated like scum in Muslim states -- look at what happened to the Albanians themselves under the Ottomans -- they were forced to convert and give their sons up as Janissaries. But that's a separate issue from this ethnic battle. This is a Slav versus Albanian clash. I don't support either side killing innocents on the other side.

It's debatable whether the Spanish vote was an indication of their fear/appeasement instincts or was simply a reaction to being lied to by Anzar about Eta's involvement in the terrorist act. He was way too quick to point the finger in their direction, and it reeked of electioneeering. I think there's a good chance the incumbant would still be in office if he were straight with the electorate about Al Qaeda's (probable) role in the attack.......

What does it matter? As Rush says: "A tiger is a tiger!" And a terrorist is a terrorist, whether he comes from ETA or al-Queida!!

Why is no one objecting to the UN person referring to these events as "Kristallnacht".

This is absolutely unacceptable.

  1. Why should we be there is a dicey question. You could put it in the same reason as why we are in Afgh and Irq -- because when people are persecuted they easily fall prey to Saudi mullahs telling them that the real cause of their suffering is the Geat Satan, the US (when actually the real cause is their dumb leaders). If we ensure that Albanians and Serbs can live well, there's less chance they'll go fundamentalist
  2. The Euroweenies should be shouldering the majority of the burden since it IS in their backyard.

I don't think we're on either side, we are peacekeeping and should ensure that neither side kills innocents on the other side (if they want to take 10 guys on either side and have them slug it out, no problem). But maybe we need to get involved for the reason I stated above. the Albanians and Bosnians were not fundamentalist until after Slobos war. the Mulllahs from Saud then started filling their heads with garbage (and it's quite easy to do so to beleaguered people) and may well have got a huge bunch of European looking, blonde, blue eyed alQ recruits. By getting involved and stopping the fighting we did stop it or at least prevent to a large extnet

Italy's PM said today he is also suspicious of ETA. He said (paraphrase) how convenient that the bombers left a backpack, with cell phone and explosive to be found. How convenient that the van was found with the Koran verses inside, and other evidence.

My thoughts also. The Spanish vote was a predictable outcome to an Al Queda attack. I wonder if ETA actually did the bombing, and "framed" Al Queda. ETA gets ahead by having a relatively friendly Spanish Socialist government installed while the "evil" Al Queda takes the blame for hundreds killed and injured. Pure, evil, genius.

Nope, the government of Yugoslavia under Slobodan Milosevic made the mess in Kosovo.
