Dean: Bush responsible for deaths in Spain
Union Leader ^ | 3/17/04 | NEDRA PICKLER

WASHINGTON (AP) - Former Democratic presidential candidate Howard Dean said Tuesday that President Bush's decision to send troops to Iraq appears to have contributed to the bombing deaths of 201 in Spain.

A growing international investigation is focusing on Islamic militants possibly linked to al-Qaida as the culprits in the Madrid train bombings last Thursday.

European intelligence agencies are trying to identify a purported al-Qaida operative who claimed in a videotape that the group carried out the bombings to punish Spain for backing of the U.S.-led war in Iraq. The tape was discovered in a trash bin near Madrid's largest mosque on Saturday after a telephone tip to a Madrid TV station.

Dean referred to the videotape when asked whether he was linking U.S. troops in Iraq to the deaths in Spain.

"That was what they said in the tape," Dean said. "They made that connection, I'm simply repeating it."

Dean's comment came as he was defending former rival John Kerry, the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, from a Bush campaign ad accusing Kerry of turning his back on U.S. soldiers fighting in Iraq.

Dean said it is the president who has not supported the troops. He said Bush sent soldiers to Iraq unequipped, misled the country on the reasons for war and made the United States less safe by focusing on a target that wasn't a threat. And, he said, "The president was the one who dragged our troops to Iraq, which apparently has been a factor in the death of 200 Spaniards over the weekend."

Dean issued a statement later to The Associated Press that said, "Let me be clear, there is no justification for terrorism. Today I was simply repeating what those who have claimed responsibility for the bombings in Spain said was the reason they carried out that despicable act."

Dean was speaking on a conference call arranged by Kerry's campaign. Campaign spokeswoman Stephanie Cutter said, "We aren't in a position to say that Spain's support for the war in Iraq made them a target."

"Governor Dean was simply repeating what's already been reported by news organizations about a group that claims responsibility for the enormous tragedy in Spain," she said. "It's clear that what happened in Spain is a painful reminder that the war on terror is far from over and the nation would be better off if this administration took the time to rebuild our alliances rather than engaging in political attacks."

I thought Al Qaeda had nothing to do with Iraq. Now we hear from Howie its Bush's making Iraq a safe haven for Al Qaeda that screwed things up in Spain. No, its Bush's fault! Man, the Democrats really are a piece of work!!!

These lying crooked liberals are beginning to sound one and the same as the killers we are fighting.

This bunch has walked up to the line and they are ready to fall into the pit they have dug themselves.

Nikita Dean is showing why he's the kind of guy Americans had second thoughts about after his performance back in January! Boy, this is another Dean classic! Just when you think they couldn't get any kookier, along comes Dean with another zinger.

Karl Rove and President Bush better be following some brilliant plan to beat these numbskulls in November, cause I just don't see it yet.

The Democrats chose Kerry precisely because they felt he wouldn't boast loudly about the worst excesses of liberalism that turns Americans off.

You know, I burned a pot on the stove last night, and I am sure it is Bush's fault.

I don't know how he did it, but after he caused all that flooding in Europe last year, and killed all those Spaniards on all those trains, I am sure a small thing like a pot is nothing for his evil karma.

Don't worry my friend, our enemy is doing a superb job of destroying himself. Time will do the rest.

It shows you how much they hate Bush that they have nothing positive to offer the American people. Everything wrong in the world's the President's fault. I just love you liberals. Keep up the good work, Howie.

I cannot believe they lack recognition that these comments make our soldiers more vulnerable.Giving aid and comfort to the enemy became acceptable in the 60s,and 70s.

Kerry certainly has practice at it and Dean has no shame, either.

Their political agenda is more important than our soldiers lives or preventing terror.Communists think like this, too.

Getting back into power is their obssession. Liberals eat, drink, and inhale politics to the point their lives revolve around it. If Kerry loses in November, they'll be really shattered.

yup and it would not surprise me in the least if the socialists in spain colluded with the bombers on the timing and opportunity of this even in madrid... just to gain power.

would socialist political operatives plan a reichstag event, just to gain power... ask hitler and the nazis...

Some considerations [the 800lb gorillas that the Leftist press and pundits ignore] that this Dean outburst drives home:

1. Do the Demos REALLY think that the world [leaving aside the Iraqi people] would be better off with Saddam still in power?

One I still come back to again and again--
2. If George Bush is such a terrible president according to the Left at home and abroad, what kind of shape would America and the rest of the world be in right now if Forrest Gore were in the White House on 9/11? Do the Lefties really think Gore would have done a better job? DO THEY???

3. At first I thought that W was being melodramatic when he said, "you're either with us or agin' us." As time goes by, I'm seeing what he meant. The only ones who have truly suffered from W's foreign policy is Saddam and Osama.

4. Deep down in their heart of hearts, I think even Gore is relieved that he was not in office. The Left would rather we and the rest of the world drown in blood because of their appeasement, just so they can claim political advantage. They are truly evil.

If not for GW Bush... this world... Almighty, please bless him...
