Get Yer Ya-Yas Out [FR Moderating Gripe Thread]
Posted on 03/15/2004 11:01:45 AM PST by I Am Not A Mod

[history]
LM here.
It's been a while since we had a thread along these lines.
I can tell from comments I am seeing in threads, on abuse reports, and in Freepmail that some people are unhappy with various policies and their implementations by the staff here.
I've seen allegations that certain factions are picked on. I've seen allegations that the moderators have killed activism. I've heard rumors that we killed Kenny, and even that we killed the radio star. I see certain personality conflicts acting up, and know that one (or both) sides in it feel that we aren't doing what we should.
So let's open this can of worms.
This thread is for making your grievances heard. If you think something stinks or is wrong, make your case here. Back it up with facts. Let the audience at large weigh in on your evidence.
I'll read the thread. Jim will too in all likelihood. So will the other moderators. Depending upon how well you make your point, and depending on if you can convince Jim, me, the other moderators, and/or the world, maybe you can change things. And if you don't, then it might make you feel better to have vented, so it won't make this thread a total loss.
I'm not going to reply to this thread for quite a while. Rather, I am going to sit back and watch to try and get a feel for the general tenor. I encourage those who are both happy and unhappy with things to particpate in this thread.
Let's rock.

I think that he was warning us
I think there is going to be a pole shift
I thought the Poles were our friends
I like blueberry pie
Its tasty, its a shame that there is a yellow fringe on the flag
My friends tell me that there is no constitution
Because the flag is fringy
I like the fringe

"Man you guys sure have a lot of trouble with one woman. Butch up guys"
?? Biker and I were on the same side as your one woman. We and the others on our side managed to strongly disagree with Rebelbase and Rightly Biased and others without getting personally nasty and juvenile.
We on both sides want the 1300+ posts of value restored and only the last round of petty attacks deleted, if any.
These cliques and petty snipings damage The Cause just as much as those we fight ideologically. It gives them ammunition against us that hinders our ability to win the debate when the debate becomes sidetracked by the ugly personalities fronting for our side.

I thought conservatives would naturally know how to behave in polite family setting.
But we're all human. Human nature is selfish at it's core and selfishness can lead to perceptions which cause "politeness" to go out the window. Thus rules are needed to create a boundry for areas where we should not go. When the boundries are violated, there must be consequences.
Common courtesy is not so common anymore. Sadly. What is common courtesy for one is not even closely related to another.
Family might be a close analogy, but even in families there are fights, there are differences of opinion and belief. Words are spoken that shouldn't. Grudges are held. But there should be, and is (I believe), a common bond that does hold us together as family. You, being "the man in charge", get to decide what those bonds are. The rest of us can either agree with those bonds, or move on to something else.

No those are nice and I have used some of them myself and I can deal with those they are "heat kitchen out" blanks
The blanks I am refering too I will not repeat. If the thread that was blacklisted gets restored you could read some of them for yourself.

AMEN!
Tooooooooooooooooooooooooo much vagueness can contribute to unintended offenses.
And a list of such would add clarity as well as soberness about such, I think.
Lack of knowledge will lead to speculation. Speculation will lead to rumors and half-truths. Rumors and half-truths incite.
Let's put up a darn penalty box for FReepers who are suspended or banned. Not the "trolls", but frequent posters, long-time members, and others so that there is no misunderstanding, no rumors, no speculation, no half-truths. Why give defenders of those banned the defense of being able to speculate and rumor monger. Get it out there for all to see.
I like it. A penalty box. JoeBlow - 2 days - personal attack. So-and-so - 1 day - obscene comments. Etc. Attacking-Dan - 3 months - excessive language with intent to injure. Etc.

"These cliques and petty snipings damage The Cause just as much as those we fight ideologically. As I said to her in "that thread" we all joined FR for one reason we hate liberalsim and love conservatism and I wanted to leave it at that,But nooooooo. The personal attacks continued.

So one thread is what you are basing your desire for her being banned on? Hells bells, go to liberty post and see what they say about her over there. She is a cottage industry on that forum and there are several cross posters that come on FR just to attack her and then run back and post her responses. I saw the thread you are most likely talking about and I saw a few of the LP posters on it.

I just got here a few weeks ago and I am still getting the hang of things. But compared to other places I USED TO post on the web, this site seems much more civil and thoughtful. Personal attacks, if left unchecked, can ruin a board. I'm having fun and learning a lot. I hope my posts meet the high standards I've seen here.

Lesson Learned.
My head ain't that hard no mater what Mrs. Rightly Biased says.

See my last paragraph.
I've said all I need, and I know where this will lead unless something is done. So, I'm done.
(BTW - I'm a proud supporter of Bush. We have no disagreements politically, but only on holding each other accountable for stating our positions in a way that doesn't shame us as Freepers and "Bushbots".)

If nopardons is too strong for your taste then ignore her. Most of us do ignore her.
The problem is the flame wars she starts, and even though most of us ignore her, one person finally gets fed up and then there are two flaming, and then Jim pulls the thread for being the flame war she started, for example Market Wrap-Up (2-25-2004).
