WASHINGTON (CNN) -- This week's deadly train bombings in Spain will not lead to a rise in the U.S. color-coded terror threat alert system, a Department of Homeland Security spokesman said Friday.

"Based on the current intelligence, we have no specific indicators that terrorist groups are considering such an attack in the U.S. in the near term," said department spokesman Brian Roehrkasse.

Purported Qaeda E-Mail Claims Iraq Hotel Blast-Paper

March 19 — DUBAI (Reuters) - A London-based Arabic newspaper said on Friday it received an e-mail from al Qaeda claiming responsibility for an attack on a Baghdad hotel that killed at least seven civilians.

Asharq al-Awsat reported that the e-mail from Abu Mohammed al-Ablaj, a little-known al Qaeda member, said: "Al Qaeda lions...in Iraq to meet their enemies are the ones who planned and carried out this operation."

Small Bomb Explodes in Virginia Damaging Junk Car; No Evidence of Terrorism

FIELDALE, Va. March 19 — A small, "very low-tech" bomb damaged a junk car parked outside an auto-repair shop, and state police detonated another one found on the car's roof, authorities said Friday.

The explosion happened shortly before 5 p.m. Thursday in an old Volkswagen that was awaiting disposal, Henry County Sheriff H.F. Cassell said. The resulting fire was very small, only charring the car. State police remotely detonated the second device, which was the size of a baseball, Cassell said.

"This was a very low-tech operation," Cassell said. "It was crudely built, not particularly anything sinister about it."

Two men were seen fleeing in a green truck. Cassell said authorities have suspects but wouldn't elaborate except to say, "I don't think that this is anything related to terrorism."

He said the bomb makers likely didn't mean to harm anyone, as there was no evidence of shrapnel.

A nearby American Electric Power Co. substation that serves Henry County was never threatened by the explosion. "It's probably 100 yards away with a brick building in between," the sheriff said.

Cassell said the remains of the device found on the car roof has been sent to a state forensics lab.
