Ann Coulter Says Muslims 'Smell Bad'; CAIR: Media Should Reject Commentator's Bigotry

WASHINGTON, March 10 /U.S. Newswire/ -- A prominent national Islamic civil rights and advocacy group today called on major media outlets to end their association with a controversial conservative pundit who recently suggested that Muslims "smell bad." The Washington-based Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) said syndicated columnist Ann Coulter, who frequently appears as a guest on cable news programs, made that Islamophobic remark in a recent commentary on Mel Gibson's new film "The Passion of the Christ."

Coulter wrote: "Being nice to people is, in fact, one of the incidental tenets of Christianity (as opposed to other religions whose tenets are more along the lines of 'kill everyone who doesn't smell bad and doesn't answer to the name Mohammed'). She also referred to: "(The Prophet) Muhammad's many specific instructions to kill non-believers whenever possible."

"We believe strongly in freedom of speech and support Ann Coulter's right to hold even bigoted and hate-filled views," said CAIR Communications Coordinator Rabiah Ahmed. "But credible media outlets should not associate themselves with or serve to legitimize such overt racism and Islamophobia." Ahmed called on newspapers that publish Coulter's column and on cable news channels that invite her as a guest commentator to reconsider promoting someone who spreads virulent hatred and intolerance.

Coulter has made a number of similarly anti-Muslim comments since the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Immediately following the attacks, she suggested that "we should invade their (Muslim) countries, kill their leaders and convert them to Christianity." Coulter wrote in Worldnetdaily.com: "While Judaism and Christianity begin with the Creation, Islam reveres a God who creates nothing."

When asked whether she would recommend "Muslim-free air travel," Coulter said: "This is my idea...I think airlines ought to start advertising: 'We have the most civil rights lawsuits brought against us by Arabs.'" When asked how Muslims would travel, she responded: "They could use flying carpets." (Guardian, 5/17/03) Coulter also referred to Middle Easterners as "camel riding nomads" and said Egyptians have an "aversion to bathing."

About your bus trip--I am living in Sweden and for the past eight months have been taking a Swedish class three hours a day, five days a week with twenty-two arab refugees. Some of these people are lovely people, who I have gotten to know pretty well, and they are clean and smell fine. Some, however, smell so rank that I have to sit in class and breathe through my mouth for hours. Repulsive, repulsive, repulsive. It seems to me that the level of deodorant directly corresponds with the level of education (in my class, not in the US, and Swede's are incredibly clean and fresh smelling folk!); the refugees from more middle class backgrounds, regardless of age or country of origin (Iran, Iraq, Albania, China, and the ex-Yugoslav countries) don't smell, but the rest wear their stink like a coat. ICK! I wish I could think of a kind way to tell them that assimilation would be much easier if they would only wear anti-perspirant and BATHE!

I'm Swedish as well, but living in U.S.! I know the problem with the refugees home pretty well, as we still have an apartment in Malmoe and goes there frequently. When you take the bus, you would think your were in the U.S., because there are more colored ethnic people on the buses than there are white Swedes. One time I took a business trip to Poland via ferry from Ystad-Stettin. On the return from Stettin I boarded the ferry about 9 PM and went to the cafeteria which was mostly empty. Next morning arriving Ystad, I got the biggest surprise because at the exit to the gangway there were hundreds of refugees coming through Poland from Yugoslavia waiting to get on shore. Because I could show my "Tre Kronor" passport, I was whizzed through the crowd by the Pass Polisen!
However, I still think the women are leaking the odors more than men, probably because of their monthly periods?

That's a pretty obvious non sequitur. Those two statements have nothing to do with each other. Ann Coulter is just as bad as Al Franken. They don't have any shame. I think some Muslims in America get a bad rap. Lots of them just came to America seeking better lives for their families and a piece of the American dream.

My mother worked in a small dress shop in a small town not far from a big government facility which employed many people from other countries.

She said that there was a noticeable increase in the odor level in the dressing rooms after some immigrant women used them.

I had friends among that particular group of foreign nationals. My mother wasn't prejudiced--she was just reporting the facts.

For being honest? Truthfully have you ever been around a Muslim who smelled good? They have certain methods allowed by their imans for cleaning themselves --- which does not include a daily shower with good soaps and shampoos. It's okay to say certain Europeans smell bad --- there are also some Europeans who don't smell too pleasant because they don't believe in showering very often.

They would probably smell okay if they had the same hygiene standards as we do --- but they just don't. Anyone who doesn't bathe as often as we do --- whether their religion or culture or lack of water dictates to them how often to bathe just isn't going to be fun to be around. Some of our own ancestors 100 years ago didn't smell real nice either I'm sure.

People from India who aren't Muslims use curry and don't smell bad, at least not the ones I've been around. Pakistanis aren't at all pleasant to be around.

Maybe it would be better if they shaved their arm pits when they took that bath. I know that alot of foreign women don't shave, i'm no scientist but I know that a hairy armpit will carry more odor than a shaved one.
