Week of real hatred: film critic suffers backlash to 'Passion' review
New York Daily News ^ | 2/29/04 | Jami Bernard

Posted on 02/29/2004 7:54:25 AM PST by Brian Mosely

In 18 years as a professional movie critic, I've never gotten the response that I had this week to my one-star review of "The Passion of the Christ."

I knew the reaction would be hostile - movie critics routinely get hate mail, even one time for a review of "Bambi."

But, as they would say in an action movie of the kind Mel Gibson formerly made, this time, it's personal.

WHEW!! Those sarcasm tags make a difference, don't they? Thanks for explaining that to me. (Whew again!)

I am looking forward to this. I have not been a guest at a Bar Mitzvah before, although I was part of a dance group hired to entertain at one about 15 years ago. :-)

My mother's father was a Ukrainian/Polish Jew (we're not sure who owned Vilna at the time, but I'm looking!). That is a part of my heritage that I am very proud of. My grandpa emigrated to Ellis Island when he was 8, just at the end of the 19th century, and then came west.

I know my son will enjoy it as well - he got a little taste of the Chanukah miracle while watching a Disney TV movie (Full Court Miracle), which was a simplified telling of the story of Judah Macabee. He asked a lot of questions about that, which was cool.

Thanks again.

best...

You are the one coming up with all the hateful language, not me (dung, nazi's etc). Thus those images and emotions reside inside you, and you are clearly the one struggling with them and spewing them out.

I am not sure I see it as whining, but I do get the impression it was an assignment from her editor, and she did her best to fill it. That's why it doesn't quite come off. Or that's my impression.

so Jami thinks it's a bad film? Well there sure is a big market for bad films. They were showing the Passion on 3 screens @ 10am in Memphis at one suburban location today. Twenty screens in the entire city I think. Three screens @ 10am. On a Sunday! WOW.

Perhaps she did her best. "... doesn't quite come off" suits me. At least "... doesn't quite come off" is not defending the substance of the column.

Now he gets to be a victim.

The founders of the democrat party must be flipping in their graves.

All modern democrats are weak.

Weak in character, weak in strength, weak in ethics, weak in morality, just plain weak.

I'm sure she's equally concerned about Rush Limbaugh's hate mail.

This points out something that the left, and Democrats by extension, will never have: context. They have no past only their present feelings to guide them.

Thus their brains can't be guided by 9/11 in national defense because the past does not register with their present wishes. They can't understand the context of the violence because they only see the present threat of this movie conveying a cohesive good vs evil message.

Homosexuals want marriage now, the left has no ability to grasp any history or past to deal with that issue, only present feelings of want.

They can't frame violence in passion with past movie violence because they have no past to put this into context. Only a set of pleasure principles which guide them autonomically to object on any grounds. A cockaroach does not know the type of light only that light makes them run.

Using love against christians is what homosexuals are doing.

They are confusing love with acceptance. She has love, just not acceptance.

Remember Christ did unload on the money changers.

Two thinks pop out 1. Chick flix and 2. Parrot named after a kung fu movie.

Movie critic, what a useless profession. I am my own critic. I don't need anyone to tell me whether a movie is good or bad. If I am intrested in the subject I'll see it & judge for myself.

I watched as much as I could stomach of it

Yes, I felt certain you hadn't watched the whole film. If you had, there's no way you could call it "blatantly anti-Christian" anymore than someone with an open mind could call "The Passion" blatantly anti-semitic.

Didn't Herod's court bear an uncanny resemblance to the Clinton Whitehouse?

Don't you mean "Whorehouse?"

Post #102: LOL, you must have psychic powers. You channeled the hateful, hypocritical, whining, liberal mentality perfectly. Perhaps you were a liberal in a former lifetime.

Oh sure, thank me then slap me. No, just that I'm acutely aware of the 1000 word run sentence, the emotional slew that pours from their open mouths when given just the tiniest opening. It's horrible. Only to be outdone by the mob actions of the ignorant who loudly echo "Right on! Power to the people. Every vote counts..." It's as if we are in a nightmare.... What's that quote? Those who satan would conquer he first drives mad? Something like that. LOL Perhaps an FR investment in giant earplugs would do the trick ;)
