In its second full day in theaters, Mel Gibson's The Passion of the Christ held up remarkably well and grossed $14,781,316, dropping 44% from its opening day haul of $26,556,573. Take out the estimated $3M in preview grosses that were added to Wednesday's figure, and the decline stands at a surprisingly mild 37%. By comparison, Wednesday-to-Thursday drops for other recent high-profile event films bowing on Wednesdays include 51% for The Return of the King, 57% for Star Wars Episode I, 47% for The Two Towers, and 55% for The Matrix Revolutions.
To date, Passion has collected a stunning $41.3M going into the Friday-to-Sunday weekend period with tremendous strength. That puts it in the same company as The Phantom Menace, which launched with a Wednesday-Thursday take of $40.9M leading to a five-day bow of $105.7M. Also performing in similar fashion was The Two Towers which took in $40M in its first two days capturing $102M over its five-day opening frame. At its current pace, the Jesus tale may also reach the neighborhood of $100M over its Wednesday-to-Sunday debut frame.

It's hard to explain. The violence and gore are so direct and so personal, and the camera angles so artful, that it's an emotionally devastating work of art. Whereas all the violent trash on cable is forgotten instantly, this will stay with people forever.

Would be nice to have the Ascension and all on some DVD extra footage, but it is a good movie either way to have on hand. I haven't seen it yet, but I believe the movie only covers the last twelve hours leading up to Christ's death on the cross. The ascension didn't happen until 40 days after He rose.

If Mel does the DVD with an extra half hour of footage it will sell millions of copies. Let's hope so...my only complaint was that there should have been more flashbacks into His life.

It does have a short Resurrection scene.....a great depiction as well. Wait till you see it.
I would have liked a couple minutes more of it, but oh well.

You're right, it may be gone from theaters. But boy would those theaters be nuts to pull the movie while it's still Lent!

I am positive that the footage of the flashbacks was cut to fit into the 2 hour time frame. I expect there is more of the Last Supper, washing of the feet, Sermon etc....I bet also more footage of Jesus with his mother other then when he was making the table and as a child when he fell....

You killed my Savior!REPLY.........Yes....but he wouldn't be your SAVIOR if someone hadn't.
Why does this nonsense even exit? If Christ DIDN'T willingly DIE for ALL OF OUR SINS then none of us could go to HEAVEN. The WHOLE IDEA was for him to DIE FOR OUR SINS, so we would be saved. What is so hard to understand about that?

When I saw Jesus at the end, whole again, I was simply stunned and did not move for a while as did many others. That for me led to massive reflection for the entire day.
I rarely think of the gore but that scene more so. I was prepared for the gore in fact it could have been worse as the movie was only 2 hours.

Notice that while they give the 2 day figures for ROTK, Star Wars, etc, they don't say the obvious : PASSION has now made more on WED-THUR than ANY film in history. (This is according to the numbers in the article, if they are correct).

I think Passion movie will set phenomenal records, especially as it hits other countries by storm. Latin America (strong Catholic), certain portions of Europe, certain Asian and African countries. Total word-wide sales could dwarf any prior movie. For example, people in Argentina may not care much about Matrix or Keanu Reeves, but they care about Jesus. Of course, foreign production costs will be minimal (just change the sub-titles)!

CORRECTION : The 40 Mill is for the Two Towers. ROTK made 51 MIllion it's first 2 days. SO that puts Passion #2 for Wed-Thur openings.

"my niece plays basketball for a Jewish Community Center team. Yesterday they played the Methodists and right before the tipoff an 11 year old girl said to my niece in an angry and audible voice, "You killed my Savior!" NICE!"
How does this relate to the movie?

If Mel does the DVD with an extra half hour of footage it will sell millions of copies.
If he puts in the footage that he was forced to remove due to idiocy it just may break box office records or come close to it !

How does this relate to the movie? You have to have your internal filter set VERY high to ignore this type of junk. Non-sense gets interjected into EVERY public conversation that involves Jesus. It seems every one knows some Christian that did something stupid and uses it to justify disbelief in Jesus. Its the same argument that you must condemn Jesus because a movie called the Passion of Christ was made about Him from a guy name Mel Gibson whom's father said something stupid about the holocaust.

What is so hard to understand about that? I think this is blown out of context. We are talking about an 11 y/o kid here, not exactly the most intellectual age of most girls. Odds are, this kid has not reached the age of understanding of Jesus and how it all is pieced together. (Age of accountability varies of course, I was about 17 before I reached it).
Now, I truely believe the parents of this rude child should do a better job (but kids will mess up sometimes anyways). But, as far as knowing fully what was said, I doubt this girl has a clue.
