In its second full day in theaters, Mel Gibson's The Passion of the Christ held up remarkably well and grossed $14,781,316, dropping 44% from its opening day haul of $26,556,573. Take out the estimated $3M in preview grosses that were added to Wednesday's figure, and the decline stands at a surprisingly mild 37%. By comparison, Wednesday-to-Thursday drops for other recent high-profile event films bowing on Wednesdays include 51% for The Return of the King, 57% for Star Wars Episode I, 47% for The Two Towers, and 55% for The Matrix Revolutions.

To date, Passion has collected a stunning $41.3M going into the Friday-to-Sunday weekend period with tremendous strength. That puts it in the same company as The Phantom Menace, which launched with a Wednesday-Thursday take of $40.9M leading to a five-day bow of $105.7M. Also performing in similar fashion was The Two Towers which took in $40M in its first two days capturing $102M over its five-day opening frame. At its current pace, the Jesus tale may also reach the neighborhood of $100M over its Wednesday-to-Sunday debut frame.

The titans in Mordor could be reeling before this is over. They thought that only fundamentalist kooks would see this movie. Now it's on its way to being one of the biggest moives in recent years. And the most damaging part is that not a single auk had anything to do with it.

Have you heard there's no time limit for speeches at the Oscars?

There's also a no LOW limit on IQ's.

Yep, it was instituted along with the "no limit for stupidity."

So much for the Hollywood mindset that it was going to be a non-movie.

What about all of the fools that turned Gibson away when they had the chance to distribute this piece of history? Fox, Disney et al had a gold mine land in their laps and let it go. They must be kicking themselves.

Even worse for them is that this is not some piece of Christian fiction like the prophecy movies. Its an accurate, unentertaining, depiction of Jesus Christ.

I am unaware of Methodist theology (or that of any other Christian denomination) that would teach a child to tell another child that "you killed my Savior" 2000 years after the Crucifixion. She didn't get it from a Christian church nor from the movie The Passion.

From what I heard on OReilly last night. He called the two directors mentioned in The New York Times, and it sure sounded like they were backtracking on their comments.

For my ownself, the last movie I saw in a theater was E.T. in the 80s.
I do *not* go to theaters and I -always- wait around and buy the DVD of movies I want to see.
I'm sure there are a LOT of people just like me.
They can't even begin to guess how many DVDs will be sold when it comes out.
I almost waited for this movie on DVD so that I could watch and "shut it off" if I had to.
When Wednsday came, I found myself almost inexorably compelled to get out and see it -now-.
I'm glad I did.

Caught in the Crossfire: Gibson and his movie

National Review Online ^ | February 25, 2004 | Roy Schoeman

Posted on 02/26/2004 2:59:46 PM PST by nickcarraway

It seems odd that today's self-appointed arbiters of public morality are eager to canonize sodomy as a fundamental human right, and to defend the display of a dung-smeared Madonna at public expense as a heroic exercise of First Amendment rights, while condemning Mel Gibson's literal portrayal of the Gospels as beyond the pale of acceptable social behavior. It is enough to lead one to believe that, to these critics, it is God Himself - at least, a personal God who places any particular requirements on moral behavior or, worse yet, religious practice - who is the enemy. The only God acceptable to them would be an amorphous one with no religious or moral preferences, and the only acceptable religion one that asserts no claim to objective truth. Unfortunately (to the critics) Christianity fails both of these tests, and thus so do Mel Gibson and his movie.

Money is all Babylon knows. Expect more movies with all the respect for traditional faith as the movie "Stigmata". It will be a complete mystery to them why they will be utter failures.

I think the *REAL* numbers are going to pump through on Sunday afternoon after church lets out. At least in the south, I know the Baptists are going to walk straight from the church to the theaters. Wednesday was probably actually hampered by Wednesday night congregations.

I suspect it will become the "must show" movie during the Easter season - like Charley Brown during Christmas
